Derrius Thompson

I am really starting to think that the ONLY reason that Derrius Thompson was placed on Injured Reserve was to avoid paying the $1,107,500 it would cost, if we were to release him. He's getting paid $550K so I'm thinking Saban figures by placing him on IR (This is the last year of his contract), it would be cheaper to let him sit out the rest of his contract than it would be to pay the $1,107,500 CAP HIT it would to release him. I really do believe this is the logic behind placing him on IR and if that's the case, I think that is a VERY VERY wise business move by Saban saving us AT LEAST $500K. He definitely knows what he's doing and by placing Thompson on IR, it won't cost us any money against the CAP and an injury settlement would be made. Definitely a smart move by Saban from a business standpoint.

I agree totally.

Saban is a lowlife creep. That's beyond obvious. Also a very talented football coach. I'll be rooting for the new regime despite its leader, and I've never felt that way about any of my favorite teams in any sport in 30+ years.
All I can say is WOW! I used to view your opinions with an open mind. I won't be doing that any more.

Amazing when we have a thread of people feeling sorry for DT. Guy has made alot of money and never lived up to the billing. How does anyone know what the situation was AND he is still getting paid! He is a FA after the year so how does this benefit Miami putting him on IR other than to free a roster spot now? It doesn't - they still owe his salary - maybe insurance helps pay it but I believe it counts against the cap. I'm sure Saban did it for the roster spot. I would have thought Mann would have stayed because we were going to lose DT next year anyways.

I read Thompson was asked to take a pay cut....

He said no.....so Nick puts him on IR....
Nick is IN Charge....

I am not 100 percent sure, but I think if DT is released he can sign on with another team and play this season, he just can't play for the Fins. I seem to remember this came up one other time with a Fins player.

. Saban did whats best for the organization. Everyone didnt care that we promised braylon edwards we would draft him at #2. This situation is similar. Saban just wants to do whats best for the organization, anyway he can. Even though hes sort of "dicking" the player. He's not breaking any rules. Saban isnt a pu$$y like Wanny. He won't hesitate to be a dick to someone who doesnt perform, if its best for his franchise. Its not like he did this out of spite, he did it because it was best for the dolphins

I remember that too. I belive that happened with Oronde Gasden in his last year with the dolphins.

Yep that was it, I remember that it was said that even though OG was on injured reserve, he couldn't come back and play for the Fins that season but if they released him he could sign and play with another team. So if that is the case I don't think DT is getting screwed, he is getting paid by the Fins and still has a job and if the Fins decide they don't want him he can sign on with another team and still play this season.

That was an injury settlement... Not IR

an injury settlement is done in response to a player being cut while injured. If Gadsden was on IR then he was still on the Phins roster, drawing a paycheck, and there would be no reason for and injury settlement.

I don't know the motivation behind this move. If it was done purely as a cost-cutting strategy, then it was very low, and I just don't agree with it.

What goes around, comes around. You don't think players will talk about this? Who's going to want to play for a coach and an organization that treats its players like ****?

Saban must be aware that long-term doing something so low would be a BAD business move. And the move were as devious as has been suggested, they would also have to expect DT to file some kind of grievance, and who knows how that would turn out...

So, I don't believe this move was made purely as a cost-cutting measure. There has to be more to this story.

Everyone seems concerned that it was a "cost cutting measure". Please explain how putting Thompson on IR saves the Phins money.
While on IR the Phins pay Thompsons salary which does count against the salary cap. They also have to count the final year's proration of his signing bonus against the cap.

How is this less than what the Phins would pay if they cut Thompson?
