Smart business move. He was going to get cut but we placed him on IR to keep from having to pay a Cap Hit.

The guy actually hurt his hammy. They put him on IR to see if they can get anything for him in trade and if not toss him with an injury settlement. There's no real $$ difference (since once his hammy heals up the team has to deal with it anyways) and if he was 'getting screwed' you'd hear about it cause his agent would be up in arms. Another reason for keeping him instead of outright releasing him is to buy a 2-3 more weeks to see how the receiving core shapes up with the younger guys.
/me swears this thread is like the Dodo's in Ice Age.
Diasagree completely. If Thompson really wasn't hurt and could prove this to the Players Association Union than Saban would be in big trouble with the league. His hammy obviously must be hurt more than we were lead to believe. Plus his injury settlement would still pay him what he was owed this year so there is no cap savings there.painnotpleasure said:I am really starting to think that the ONLY reason that Derrius Thompson was placed on Injured Reserve was to avoid paying the $1,107,500 it would cost, if we were to release him. He's getting paid $550K so I'm thinking Saban figures by placing him on IR (This is the last year of his contract), it would be cheaper to let him sit out the rest of his contract than it would be to pay the $1,107,500 CAP HIT it would to release him. I really do believe this is the logic behind placing him on IR and if that's the case, I think that is a VERY VERY wise business move by Saban saving us AT LEAST $500K. He definitely knows what he's doing and by placing Thompson on IR, it won't cost us any money against the CAP and an injury settlement would be made. Definitely a smart move by Saban from a business standpoint.
