Did Dennis Hickey nail this draft?

Interesting perspective. I wonder what it is that makes our organization so much more inept than everyone else, through multiple regimes? Perhaps it's something about the location? The So Fla heat and humidity makes people think slower?

While coaches and Gm's absolutely deserve the blame for dropping the ball, the owners are the ones that give those individuals the jobs in the first place.

Ross passed on, among others, Mike McCoy to hire Joe Philbin. Ross also failed to convince Jeff Fisher and Jim Harbaught to join...to say nothing of the disaster that was our GM search. Im still not sure what the hell happened there, especially after potential candidates we hired took jobs with lesser roles than the one we did.

Huizenga made even worse decisions, even though his logic was a lot more sound. We can start with the hires he made:
Jimmy Johnson was a incredible successful coach and had a personal interest in South Florida(college coaching).
Dave Wannstedt was Jimmy's hand picked heir and had experience.
Nick Saban was a coach everyone wanted.
Cam Cameron was highly respected for leading a extremely successful Chargers offense to success.
Bill Parcells achieved some measure of success every place he landed.

None of those were insane hires. Obviously mistakes in hindsight, but only in hindsight. In my opinion Huizenga's major crime was passing over Ken Whisenhunt and Mike Tomlin for Cameron(god that hurts), but, again, it did have some measure of logic involved.

Until we get a savvy owner who understands the business that is football we likely wont have much success. Which is one of the major reasons why i was praying the politicans of South Florida would slap down Ross' stadium renovations, as the man is more interested in hosting a Superbowl than this team going to one, his dreams being dashed would have lead to the possibility that he would sell to someone capable of hiring a competent regime. But, much to the approval of many, Ross was able to pass the renovations. Now we are stuck with him for another decade.
My one last hope is that Ross goes after Harbaugh again after this season. Unless Harbaugh wins the Superbowl, there seems to be a legitimate chance of prying him loose from them. Unfortunately it would cost us a busload of draft picks. But what can you do.

No. Sorry to rain on the feel good theme going on in this thread but this is the 2010 draft all over again. We collect starters while other teams collect stars. Even Ireland looked competent walking out of that draft with Jared Odrick and Koa Misi, but that didnt stack up so well against Geno Atkins and NaVarro Bowman. Our draft class isnt indicative of Hickey's talent, its indicative of the talent of this draft class. Going in, everyone knew it was stacked. And we collected quite a few solid prospects. We took a step forward. Unfortunately, the rest of the league took 3 steps foward...which makes us 2 steps behind. Again.
What a brilliant assessment. I'm pretty sure you have some facts to back up your "which makes us 2 steps behind" everyone else in the league. Or do you?

Anyways, on to the subject:

Are people tired of hearing about Brandin Cooks' daily exploits yet? I honestly don't think that we in the media are over-hyping the Saints' rookie receiver. He simply makes one or two of the biggest plays on the practice field every day. As quarterback Luke McCown said Monday, "He's got next level speed ... and quickness. We find him in positions where he's just separating from guys regularly." That was absolutely the case again Monday during an otherwise-sloppy practice in the rain. As Cooks said, he's from Corvallis, Oregon, so he's used to this weather. Cooks had two breakaway plays for big gains on short passes -- once cruising about 75 yards for a touchdown on a screen pass. Cornerback Keenan Lewis valiantly gave chase the whole way but didn't really have a chance. "He's a special player," McCown said. "I think that's easily recognized for any amount of time you spend watching him. He's a smart, heady player that you only have to teach a certain route or step or technique once, and he's got it down, and he begins to operate like a veteran. So the sky's the limit for that kid."

Rookie receiver Brandin Cooks is one of those guys who lets his play on the field do the talking for him. Luckily for the New Orleans Saints, Cooks has the volume cranked all the way up.

The Saints’ first-round draft pick delivered a dynamic performance in his preseason debut Friday night, catching five passes for 55 yards in a 26-24 victory over the St. Louis Rams. The highlight was a stop-and-go move on a 25-yard touchdown catch that might still have a couple of Rams defensive backs spinning in place inside Edwards Jones Dome.

Time for your daily Brandin Cooks highlight reel: The Saints' dynamic rookie receiver had two nifty catches in Tuesday's practice. He burned cornerback Trevin Wade with a sharp cut for a big gain on a screen pass. And he caught a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone from Luke McCown. ... Normally, rookies have to adjust to the “speed of the NFL game.” But Cooks was asked whether he feels like he's reversing that trend and making defenders adjust to his speed. “Well, I have to use my strengths to my advantage, and that's my speed. As far as the speed of the game, it's not that much different to me,” Cooks said. “But how smart people are, that's the different part from college to the NFL. That's where you have to work on your game.”

And theres more. Much more. But hey, we got a solid tackle, total worth passing on.

So yeah, i fully expect Cooks(provided he stays healthy) to win the award. He will get the throws and sure as hell has the ability. Hes a special player, which is why some of us wanted Miami to draft him.
And while i dont expect him to win the award(based on their quarterback situation), i wouldnt be surprised if Marqise Lee(another coveted prospect who i would have loved for us to draft at 19) enters the conversation either. Hes quietly playing well in Jacksonville:

...Receiver Marqise Lee has been the best rookie in camp. The former USC standout was lining up with the first team even before Cecil Shorts (hamstring) got hurt. Quarterback Chad Henne said he has been impressed by Lee’s ability to understand coverages and adjust his routes, something they both attributed to Lee playing in a pro-style offense at USC.

Sullivan is going to provide an update on the progress of rookie receiver Marqise Lee, who has been the team's most impressive rookie -- and its best receiver in camp.

http://espn.go.com/blog/jacksonville...up-call-day-11

The receivers had a much better day on Tuesday after what was a terrible performance on Monday, when they dropped multiple passes while running routes against air. Marqise Lee made a great catch along the sideline on an out pattern in which he quickly got both feet in bounds.

Admittedly that only covers so many teams, but even if i took the time to go over each roster i already know how it would end: THE MEDIA LIES!!1!one!!!one!1!

Now, if you dont mind, please answer why we've kept up with every other team in the league? Please explain, even if we kept up with them, why we should be expected to beat them next seasons(after all "keep up" isnt "overtaking").
And if your answer includes a stabilized offensive line, please, please, please, explain why this first and third round pick(and Albert) will secure a line that hasnt been secured by the 1st overall pick, the 15th overall pick, a second round pick, 2 third round picks, a fourth round pick, a sixth round pick, and over $100 million. Im ready to be proven wrong. By all means: go.

Spesh, all you're showing us is media reports. I bet you'll find those same reports about Landry, Tripp, Williams etc. It's reports, nothing else. Those players haven't played a single meaningful down in this league. There's no way of telling what kind of player any of those individuals will become.

And before I forget: John Benton is the sole reason that the 2014 offensive line will be improved. If you don't believe me, I'll find you some media articles about it. The difference: John Benton is a proven commodity in this league, unlike the rookie players you mention.

How many other teams passed on the players you mention? Does that make those teams who passed two steps behind also?

I believe Landry will be every bit as good as Cooks and/or Lee. And most likely more durable. JMHO

Oh, neat, it was media lies!!!one!one!one!one!!!

Unless they are saying something nice about the Dolphins of course. And if that prophecy doesnt come true, well by god, its the fans fault.

Edit: by the way, laughed out loud that you called out "rookies" in a thread about....wait for it...this recent draft. Are you under the assumption that players drafted a few months ago arent rookies? Actually...dont answer that, keep looking up articles for how a Houston Texans line coach is going to lead us to the Superbowl!!!1111!1121!one!

There is no manual on how to become a good NFL owner. Sometimes you have to just learn from some mistakes. Stephen Ross learned a lot from the Jim Harbaugh flirtation (hey he's a big Michigan fan and donor) in not expecting his movements to be tracked. The fallout and the consequences of keeping Tony Sparano when his instincts told him he wasn't the answer, were significant.
But Mr Ross has learned from this and I don't have a problem with his appointments of Joe Philbin and Dennis Hickey. It's clear to me that the team is moving in the right direction and we are lucky to have the 2nd wealthiest owner in the NFL. He is a very successful businessman as one of the top real estate developers in the US and I think that it just took a while for him to learn who he could trust and who he couldn't. I support his decision to replace Jeff Ireland 100%. I also support his decision to spend $350M of his own money to upgrade the stadium, rather than beg for public funding like some of the other sports owners.

Tony Sparano is still the head coach of the Miami Dolphins.

That didn’t stop owner Stephen Ross from meeting with Jim Harbaugh about the job before Harbaugh signed on with the 49ers and it isn’t stopping him from trying to talk to another possible replacement. Albert Breer of the NFL Network is reporting that Ross has reached out to Bill Cowher’s agent about Cowher’s interest in taking over the reins of the team. Earlier this week, Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com reported that Ross had spoken with intermediaries about Cowher and Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported that Cowher has “planted seeds” that he’d be interested in the Miami job.

Same thread every year and we know how it's turned out the past decade...

Let them play first.

I didn't say it's a lie. I said nobody knows if the players the media today rave about are going to be good tomorrow. I'm just saying the grass isn't greener on the other sides. Unless you can convince me with facts. Which you absolutely can't, I'm sure.

Sorry, i dont have a Delorean. Even lacking that, i listed a whole bunch of reasons as to why i feel i do even before the draft began.

Now, can you list any reasons for your opinion other than "They are amazing because they have a Dolphins logo"? Im waiting. Please, list why.

This team continues to do things that have kept them in mediocrity for over a decade like drafting OL in the first round when other teams draft playmakers in the first round, yet we need to provide "facts". Look, I could be dead wrong. Maybe he did nail it. I'll take that chance.

I'd love to be wrong on this but history is a great teacher. I've been right 12 of the last 13 years. And no, there will be no crow to eat if we're wrong this time. You get no credit for being a blind ass fan the other 12 years.
