Dielman has deal in place for 12 mil signing bonus

Hutchinson's Deal had such a big cap hit in the first year, because he wa a restricted free agent, and the Vikings did that as a Poison Pill because they knew the Seahawks could not absorb that cap hit, and they had the room to do it, so it makes it more likely tha he will finish the full seven years of the contract without risk of becoming a cap casualty. Most contract are not structured that way. They usually start lower and escalate as each year progresses, but there is no way a $12million bonus would come on a 4-5 year contract... minimum 6-7, especially for a guard.

ummm, just sign Dielman, Porter, and Mughelli, Wayne. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...the great and powerful Oz, has spoken.

I can't stand these "cheap" Mr Scrooges. As if we were cap strapped or something? Bring us Dielman and Porter, Wayne. Put your money where your mouth is!!

You have to be realistic. Not only do you have 32 teams potentially trying to sign these guys, you have their own indivisual wants and needs. This isn't Madden where Miami just gets the first crack at signing whoever they want.

Then there is the fact that the way to build the team is through the draft. It isn't a cheapness, it is a realisticness that historically teams who spend a lot of free agency do not tend to be the best teams in the league.

Actually the "Poison Pill" was a clause in his contract that said if he wasn't the highest paid lineman on the team at the time he signed it he would get a $50 mil bonus... Minny did not have anybody making more then him but the seakhawks did, so they could not match the deal with out giving the crazy bonus. It really had no effect on what Minny was paying him.

12m signing bonus is not that big of a deal at all.

In a fair contract for a player of his age it means around a 6.5m salary a year.

For him that's entirely reasonable.

And yes Mr. Ed, Joey Porter while not a ROLB would still interest me at LOLB. The number of teams who could pursue him aren't that extensive since Thomas seems like a lock for the 49ers.

YA know... All that is taking place on the O line during FA, makes it prime for C-Pep to have a big year! Last year it seemed that DC couldn't get out of his own way, and it seems Cam Cam, is going to make it so he has all day in the pocket this year!! GO CAM!!!

(this probably could have been it's own thread...)

I'm all for building in the draft. Now, just prove to me we have someone that CAN draft. That's my first problem.

My second problem is we have 6 picks. SIX.

We are cutting positions that are not easily filled and not cheap.

With only 6 picks... and you know 2 or 3 statistically won't be around after year 2.....

WHAT are we BUILDING with?

Even if Mueller nails every pick.... we've still got more holes than a Packer Backer hat. Where's the depth gonna come from? Sure, we have cash right now.... but after 1 or 2 big splashes.... there won't be much left. And I think everyone's tired of bringing in retreads.

I'll tell ya.... the same talent pool we just dumped a bunch of players into.

I.E., we will not be upgrading many of these "cuts" we're making.

BELIEVE ME, I'm ALL for the cuts.... but, WHERE are we improving?

I guess we're hoping Mark Wahlberg tries out for the team.

Yes yes, because I remember the Colts weren't winning until they signed..., wait, ok how about the Steelers, they signed.. no, no, what about the Bears when they picked up..., um Seahawks got um, wait they did get Peterson the year they didn't go the the superbowl.

Well the patriots who are known for signing, ummm.

Ok the Redskins every year have HUGE signing and every year they make the superbowl, I mean playoffs, i mean, umm yea

Dupree...I couldn't have put it better myself....:sidelol:

Folks seem to forget that our problems stem from 5 years of bad personnel moves...and that is the 5 years before Saban...it's too early to tell about Saban's picks....

Nathan, I don't totally disagree with your premise, but isn't it a little early to be complaining about our FA period ??? Lets see who they bring in before we noose-em...

I love this time of year when people get stupid in love with players who end up getting way over paid for under performing.

Remember [SIZE=-1]LaVar Arrington last year? People were falling all over themselves wanting the Phins to sign him. They were saying that our D would be unstoppable if he was signed.... look at how he did and tell me more about these over valued free agents?

You read my mind...

We're not one piece away.. besides.. the draft builds championships... Free agency builds players bank accounts.

My guess was at least a 4 year deal, and at least 5 mil a year... 12 mil bonus = 8 mil+ cap hit a year. All speculation I know... but from what I've read he should get close to Steve Hutchinson $'s, maybe a little less. Hutchinson got a 7 year deal for 49 mil... 7/mil a year avg. Remember that Hutchinson's deal cost the Vikings 13 million in cap space in 2006.

I know it averages 8 million a year, but that doesn't mean that's what the cap hit would be. Most salary structures in the NFL are back ended, because they're not guaranteed. For doing that, the players receive bonus money up front, and if they're still worthy of a nice payday down the line the team with then usually restructure it into more bonus money if necessary.

Your Hutchinson example is only notable because of its length. If Dielman were to sign here I'd expect he'd get at least 5 or 6 years. But your point about what it cost Minnesota in 2006 cap money is irrelevant here, because 1) It was a restricted free agent scenario, and Minnesota structured the contract to make it harder for Seattle to match the offer; and
2) Minnesota had a ton of cap room to allow them to do such a thing.

I am in total agreement that we need to build through the draft. Free agency then would be used as a compliment to the draft and to fill the holes that the draft did not fill. Our problem has been over the last decade we have not drafted well so we have had to fill more holes through FA. We have to break the cycle and resist the urge to trade away our picks.

No, it is not realisticness. It is cheapness. We have the space to sign both these guys. The draft will net us 6 players. That's good.

Now this is the year that we have the money to spend on a quality veteran. We have an opportunity to sign Joey Porter, who we've contacted by the way...and Kris Dielman who we've expressed interest in.

For someone to state that they've rather have a mediocre player because "he's cheaper"...is Mr Scrooge bud. And that dont win too much of anything.

Especially when this is a sport that is all about selling tickets. No names arent going to sell tickets. High profiles are.

Then, Dielman and Porter are not just high profile....they are QUALITY PLAYMAKING UPGRADES.

Finally, why would we dump James, Mckinney, Anderson, DMac, Fonoti, and Jacox...and free up $8.25mil just from the OL alone, if we werent trying to make Kris Dielman, who we've expressed interest in, a legit lucrative offer?

Same thing with Porter. Why would we dump Carter, Bowens, Vickerson, Spragan, and Traylor...and free up $5.2mil from the DLine alone, if we weren't trying to make Joey Porter, who we've contacted, a legit lucrative offer?

C'mon. This isnt Madden...but it isnt the depression either...

Our friends at scout.com are reporting there's a good chance free agent G Kris Dielman doesn't leave Seattle without signing a contract.

If he leaves without signing one, the Cleveland Browns would be very in the mix.

It's another reason why the club should've franchised Steve Hutchinson last year.
