I think that is what he meant, he's not setting specific goals because if people don't reach them they think and are perceived they are a failure. He just wants to do his best and grow as a person wihtout the added pressure of goals.
Goals can also act as limits. It's easy to do that when you're weightlifting for example... if you tell yourself "I'm going to try 10 reps" you give yourself an excuse to stop at 10, when your real goal might have been "I want to do this set to failure" which might really have been 12 reps.
Goals are great in many ways, but they have a negative side.
