Do we need to be worried about Shelley Smith?

I really hope that Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner are good enough to start this year, because I too have concerns about Shelly Smith. As AccordOn13z posted, if Thomas and Turner are the real deals, our offensive line will be good for a long time.

Ya I agree, in an ideal world turner and thomas would be our guards with smith coming in for obvious running plays and short yardage work

Shelly Smith is a journeyman player. He is not in their long term plans. He is just another guy with a shot to make this team. He is no lock.

Hahaha.... I was talking about Earl Mitchell, not Shelley Smith. Don't worry......Now I'll just sit here all night repeatedly face palming myself.

I don't see why he'd be considered a journeyman player...I agree with some of what UK is saying, he's getting paid good backup money, fringe starter money at best. We're his second team...he's in his prime years hypothetically so he's in no way a journeyman. He has definite tools, I don't get why everyone has such a concrete opinion on a guy I doubt they've watched...especially when they're freaking out about his play in shorts against a top 10 DT on a new team in a new system...ridiculous.

I'm not worried about shelly.

I'm more happy that we got Starks back. Getting Starks back is pretty awesome, I didn't think it was going to happen, and I realize as fans, we underrated him. And every season and training camp, you always hear how he's destroying guys, and he takes that right with him throughout the season.

Keeping Starks was a underrated move.

What has seemed ridiculous to me is those who have watched him play and thinks he has what it takes to upgrade our OL. The abuse he took from Starks was not Shelly being rusty, it is Shelly being Shelly. He just doesn't have the skill set to ever be a solid pass protector. Might be a good option on the GL as an extra TE, but not a starter at OG on a decent OL.

thank you for clarifying. but 1) where have you heard earl mitchell has been getting "torched so far?" and 2) do you (and whoever said mitchell is getting torched) know there are no pads and no contact permitted in OTA's?

Dont worry a guy that wasn't good enough to be a starter on a fairly bad line will make our bad line better lol

yeah i'd be worried about a guy who has always been a liability in pass pro showing as one so far here as well...its like people think cause a guy puts on your uni that he's gonna morph into something else when he gets there...benton may be good but i doubt he's a magician...still smiths game is physicality and moving people off the ball and at times being overly aggressive and oversetting in pass pro as a result...gonna be a tough fix

lazor better load that playbook with 3 step drop and rise and fire...move the pocket roll outs etc...

and james walker makes a very good point that billy turner is playing high on the inside...well what did this team expect the guys a natural in space tackle being kicked inside...there will be a transition period there for sure

dallas thomas even in shape isn't half the move athlete billy turner is...although his body does look a lot better to me in the couple pics i have seen...seems to have lost that baby fat and sloppy look...the work ethic seems to be there...

We are going to have to be patient with Billy Turner. He's the opposite of a plug and play guy. What do you expect from North Dakota State though. Hopefully he learns fast though. We may take some lumps with him early but I see a potentially high ceiling with him.

If Dallas Thomas can actually come through as a starting caliber NFL guard well then you've got a 5 year line.

Not sure Albert OR Pouncey will be here for 5 years, in today's NFL, but I see your point and hope Turner can turn into the player we all think he can. Not sure it will happen this year, but I think he will be our starter next year, or later in the season this year. His game day "tude" is nasty.

The whole Oline is a huge issue and Smith does not fit the bill as the solution based on his background. Now I am big believer in the coach making the difference. That is based on when John Sandusky was here and he would take castoffs and rejects from other teams and make them pretty good offensive linemen. So having a new coach opens the door for a little hope because our last offenive line coach was not up to those standards. Talking about the history of the Dolphins and the offensive line making a differnce let me remind every one that Shula's last year was based a lot on the bad performance of the offensive line after we spent 2 high round draft picks to fix it and the same issue came about during Dave Wanstants last year with the Dolphins. One of the reasons to be a Debbie Downer on Philbin is his loyalty to his assistants that were not getting the job done and lets face it the offensive line has been a issue.

Way too early, on the other hand the knock on Smith was his pass blocking.

I agree with the poster who sees Turner and Thomas starting at guard when all is said and done.

Shelley Smith has started 8 games since 2010 in the NFL
HE IS THE DEFINITION OF QUESTION MARK
