He was getting killed...including a disastrous performance against the Dolphins.....Then something clicked in Charlie Weis's mind....He started calling max protect plays with 2 and three guys in the pattern and allowed Brady to complete "playground" type routes.......

That NE line absolutely sucked at that point and it slowly got better as they improved their passing game...

Are you listening Chris Foerester?

1) Brady did not play his rookie year
2) Feely is not Tom Brady
3) The Pats O-line in 2000 is 10 times better than Miami's line this year

Tom Brady was not Tom Brady his first few games.

If memory serves me correctly, their offensive line did look pretty bad when Miami played them.

Theisman was saying it sunday night. We should have gone max protect and only send out 2 or three routes. I think our skill players are good enough to get it done with short quick routes with max protection. This five-wide junk is going to get whoever the qb is, killed.

Believe it or not there is a ton of potential on this offensive line, they are just too young right now.

Infins, talked to my dad today and he said the exact thing about the max protect scheme...might be on to something.

Yes he was.. Tom Brady didn't throw a single interception for his first 163 pass attempts. It wasen't untill 3 games latter, in the fourth quater against the Broncos in Denver that he gave up his first INT. After that, he put it behind him and started again. And of course, remember he went on to win the Superbowl his rookie year.
But I think the point trying to be made here is that you can't loose faith. Even when things aren't going your way.

well when he played the dolphins I was very unimpressed and I did not think the Patriots were going to make the playoffs.

the point I am trying to make is the team improved greatly as the year went on. They were not super dominating from start to finish like so many people are saying they were.

No they wern't, I was just hoping for a good showing against the Rams on Sunday night. Maybe a spark that would make others around the leauge sit up and take notice.

But your point is well taken.

And the 2004 Dolphins are not the 2000 Patriots. You're guys are insane if you want to make that comparison. There is no way the Fins make the playoffs this year. Now get rid of that bum of a head coach and you'll be heading in the right direction.;)

Tom Brady, I hear, was a 4th string QB at one time. Sort of Rags to Riches story. AJ Could be the same. The simularities end there bc you get into intangibles like quality of O-line, coaching bla bla bla...

In the end its wait and see.

It just goes to prove that coaching is very important to the success of a team. You can forget about it with this conservative coach who is slow to adjust and hesitant to change.

I disagree with Theisman's max protect theory. Against CINC we tried max protect and Bengals still got to the QB. The blocking cannot handle any blitz. If you put out 2-3 receivers, you got 5-6 guys covering and 5-6 guys in position to blitz. Without any regard to our non existent running game the more guys you have in max protect the more guys coming on the blitz.
The only solution IMO is to completely spread the field in shotgun formation with 4-5 receivers in the pattern. Less guys in the box to blitz, QB gets more time and a better view over field to see blitzing defenders. Hate this type of offense but may be only way for us to score more than 1 TD a game.

Steve Goldstein, for what it's worth, said this after Brady came to town and the Dolphins beat the Pats that year, in 2001. He said, "Tom Brady is not meant to be an NFL Quarterback and the Dolphins showed him he needs to find another profession", Low and Behold what people see and say.
