There are 3 problems with this D, and I think one fixes itself.

1. Lack of CB depth. This should fix itself when everyone gets healthy and more experience. I think having Patterson, Taylor, and Davis all healthy and ready to put with Grimes is a solid unit.

2. Bad tackling by LBs. Flat out, we tackle bad.

3. Weak safety play. I'm ready to cut Wilson entirely. And Clemons needs to be better at supporting the run. We could add 2 safeties in the draft and promote Don Jones, release both Wilson and Clemons, and I'd be fine.

Did we win the Super Bowl? Did we shut out the other team in each and every game? Duh, of course we need to improve the defense. We need to improve every facet of this team. Don't forget, even in the best case we will only be 9-7. We have a heck of a long way to go before we will be competitive for the Super Bowl.

Chris Clemons needs to be replaced. At best he is a non-factor, but his inability to make game changing plays always extends drives for the opponent and sometimes causes us to lose games. He is the safety version of Sean Smith and I would be perfectly find putting that era behind us.

Phillip Wheeler should be declared a bust and the loss cut, but that is probably too much to ask.

Great post. I think a lot of times fans forget that offense and defense go hand-in-hand to some degree. When Miami dominated running the ball (many moons ago), the defense was always fresh. Our current team has too many three and outs, which puts the defense right back on the field. That's tough for any defense.

Having said that, I am concerned that we are becoming too finese on both sides of the ball. I get the changes on defense, but we definitely need some power players on the offensive line and need to start consistently converting those short-yardage plays.

Let Ellerbe, Wheeler, and Jones play as well as they did last year for next year, and not what they did this year, and we are much improved.

Starks AND Solia, along with Grimes are MUST signs IF we believe we are a legit contender. IF not, save the money, go younger, and maybe trade Wake.
