Do You Think David Bowens Has Trade Value?

Maybe we can get the bears interested, they like ex miami DE, and they like guys with freak injuries while doing stupid stuff (a la Thomas Jones) Seems like a perfect fit to me

Thing is, are we trying to cut him?

We didn't cut him before the draft because we weren't absolutely sure we could find an upgrade there. Now that we have that upgrade in Roth, there is no way we're going to pay $1.9 million in base salary for our fourth DE. He's going to replace about two-thirds of that with incentives, or he's going to be gone.

First off, D. Bowen has proven he can play in the NFL..Roth we know nothing about when it comes to playing in the NFL..he's small for the DE and may not be able to play every down. He has a good motor, but so does D. bowens, I don't think he was a major problem last year, but he's clearly being labeled a marked man when Saban brought in so many DE's and then drafted another..I'd prefer he found more DT's..but that's just me.

Sorry, but with Holliday and Roth? No way Bowens is worth almost $2 million this year. If he wants to take half that? Then we have decent depth at DE with him here, but I won't lose sleep at night if he gets traded off for a 6th rounder or just cut for not lowering his salary.

Holliday has also shown he can pay in the NFL, at least when he was with the Packers, and being on a line with Jason Taylor does wonders for a guy. :D

Frankly, I'd rather use Bowens money on a good safety and/or corner who gets released come June 1st. I've got no one in particular in mind, but having cap space to spend on a couple guys then could really help this team.

True, but I think we may have enough to sign our picks and a June 1st cut or two without having to release Bowens. This is David's last year under contract. I would rather keep him then cut him, but I am leaning to trading him instead of keeping him. So, trade or keep, no cut.

Him and Zgonia for a 6th or a 7th is the best we can hope for imo

Broncos now have the Browns d-line. Which is funny, because the Broncos line was so much better last year.

Okay, to make it clear: I don't see Bowens as the starter opposite Taylor. That will be Holliday, or maybe Roth, with Bowens as back-up for either spot. Now, spending almost $2 million on a back-up? :shakeno:

I'd rather trade of course, and get a pick along with the cap savings, but the cap savings ALONE make it worthwhile to send Bowens on his way. If he accepts a salary cut (which I believe he has already refused to do) then he can stay.

This team, IMHO, still needs another vet safety, a solid #3 WR, another vet CB, and probably another DT too. Actually, any good OL and LB would be nice for depth. You see, there is NEVER enough cap money to go around, and careful spending at positions of need is critical.

Keeping Bowens is NOT a critical depth need, not at $2 million.

It's a fairly simple formula. Any player we have been trying to replace has no trade value. We're kidding ourselves otherwise. The NFL won't pay for your 2nd or 3rd teamers unless the GM has no clue. Especially if the player isn't exactly young and/or has had major surgery. Dumping him in a multi-player mutual disgust trade like Boston for Fletcher is about as good as you can hope for.

Unless a young DE/LB steps up why trade him?

Bowens may not have to play every down, and he is competent. One of the young DE might come through (e.g., Denney, Van Brown), but Bowens is a proven when it comes to applying pressure on the quarterback. He could thrive in the 3-4; why trade him.

I am intrigued by Van Brown. As a matter of fact I am intrigued by all the DL signed as free agents. Big guys. I am also intrigued by Madison, the WR from Kansas St. Big guy at 6-3, with sub 4.5 speed. Developmental project much like Gilmore.

Back to Bowens. I like his potential for OLB in the 3-4 enough to keep him. He is still young guys, and has a lot of experience for his age.

If all we can get is a 6th rounder for him, I say we keep him. Besides, I thought we were in good shape cap wise. He may be able to play LB too so that makes him versatile.

Um he has more size then David Bowens has. Roth is a rookie yes, but don't tell me he is small for the position.

David Bowens 6'3" 260lbs
Matt Roth 6'4" 278lbs
