Dolphins 2012 SALARY CAP situation; not a lot of room, folks

you don't backload contracts on guys in free agency...thats how you end up with diminishing returns and high hits on your cap down the line...you front load if anything

i don't think we are going to keep ... Bell, Incognito, Mcdaniels, Cook, Wade..... well see tho how everything plays out

This article is assuming the cap doesn't increase, which it will but by how much I don't know. The new CBA requires teams to spend 98% of that cap number starting either this year or next. Regardless some guys will have to restructure their contracts. Front office will have their work cut out for them this year and they'll have to get creative with a few contracts. Certainly trading up for RGIII and having to guarantee his entire contract would kill the cap room and make it difficult to sign any free agents that aren't just roster filler. You're looking at probably $22-$23 million guaranteed over 4 years leaving us around $13-$14 million to sign 20 other players and draft picks. That may be one big free agent and 19 scrubs...look at Dansby's hit to our cap.

McDaniels will come cheaper than Langford and he provides better pass rush. Incognito we be retained...we don't have much choice cause we don't have anyone on the roster to take his place. John Jerry will be taking either the RT spot of Vernon Carey's spot.

Where do we stand with Wake? I never heard if they re- signed him.I really don't want to lose him.....
They haven't re-signed him, yet. He is still under contract though for the 2012 season before he becomes a free agent.

Soliai and Langford are my two biggest concerns going into this offseason with both of them being free agents. They have been talking on and off with Langford since before the 2011 season even started. My hope is that they can get Langford locked up quickly so they can really start to negotiate with Soliai. Worse case scenario they can always franchise Soliai again.

Also, with Wake, Long, Smith, Incognito and some others set to become free agents after the 2012 season it would be wise to start talking numbers with them also.

i wouldn't be talking extension with anyone signed thru this season other than wake and long...and even then it would be very preliminary...i definitely wouldn't be talking extension with incognito...mcdaniels is signed one more year at $4 mil i think so yeah i think he gets thru this year if langford is allowed to walk cause he's too pricey which imo we should let happen...we could use that money elsewhere...mcdaniels though given that $4 mil number i could see as a final cuts guy if we want to get out from that #...i could also see them telling him to take a cut...

there's no way miami can sign langford and solia to an extension and still make a play at a matt flynn in free agency...unless i am really overstating flynns market in free agency which i don't think i am...

solia if you did tag him that number would jump to like $15 mil this year thats rediculous...for $5 mil more guaranteed range you could get him signed to a 5 year contract...

let carey walk unless he's willing to accept a 1 yr vet minimum deal with no guaranteed money...

keep jerry and garner in the oline rotation...jerry maybe gets the starting right tackle job

Looks pretty accurate.

Bell and Fasano getting cut can open up about $8 million leaving us at close to $30 million to work with.

Long could also be signed to a new long term deal and they can move money around and lower his cap number from $12.8 million.

Also, if Philbin wants to, we can dump Incognito and open up another $2.7 million.

From what I can see, we can be anywhere from $21 million in cap space to about $35 million in cap space.

We are OK cap wise. Our cap-toligist Dawn can work her magic and get us two big name Free Agents if need be.

We can back load contracts as well, because the cap will significantly increase in 2013 and beyond because of new TV deals.

That doesn't look fully accurate to me. I think Bell has to be cut, and Long gets extended/restructured. If we do that, we should be fine with money available. The other thing to keep in mind is that if we sign Flynn, we can structure the contact to make the cap hit this year minimal.

Incognito needs to be cut as well. I'd be happier with Jerry, Garner, or even a FA manning that spot.

ha.. jason taylor is off the salary cap. reggie bush taking a pay cut. most big contracts we signed with free agents are going down since they were front loaded. then you have soliai, and people miami is around 28 mill under cap.

Soliai wouldn't be on 2012's cap hit (yet) anyways, he's an unrestricted Free Agent.

i can see Bell being cut which i am 10000% behind. I thnk we might switch to a 4-3/3-4 hybrid which than I expect Starks to be used as NT in the hybrid times and Langford getting the boot with Soliai OR soliai retained and starks traded.

If we stick with the 3-4, Langford can be let go and we can resign Soliai for less than his cap hit this past year.

Starks can slide over to LDE and Odrick could start at RDE with McDaniels as depth.

Bell and Fasano could be cut for major savings or extending them can lower cap numbers

Extending Long could lower his number

Many are in the last year's of their deals. Extending them can provide cap relief.

For a big ticket FA, backloading some number can help get the job done in the short-term. That is why I am NOT an advocate for giving the farm up for RGIII. The draft is needed to replenish the roster in the coming years as many, many players' contracts are coming to an end.

Finally, I am not worried we got Dawn Aponte...lol.

you save like 8 million from those cuts
