Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the Miami Dolphins are close to a deal under which the NFL team would finance a $400 million upgrade to Sun Life Stadium and the county would pay the franchise a fee for bringing in major sporting events like the Super Bowl.

Gimenez, who huddling with team officials for several hours Friday, is expected to work on nailing down the agreement over the weekend. He said in a statement issued Friday evening that he would announce details as soon as they’re finalized.

The mayor said the county and the team are “close to agreeing to a deal” that needs approval from the county commission. The money for the county payments would come from tourist taxes, he added.

The agreement would cap a multi-year campaign by Dolphins owner Stephen Ross for public assistance in renovating his 27-year-old stadium, something he has argued is essential in order to attract future Super Bowl contests. The long-contemplated overhaul includes installation of new seats, new video screens, lighting and sound systems, and an open canopy to shield fans from sun and rain.

Good news for a Friday evening.

Excited, but would be happier with a new stadium...

"Tourist tax" is what Miami uses to get things pushed through. History shows that's often not the case.

That's weird? I originally saw finomenal's post only on the forum? #conspiracy

Either way, can't wait to see (and experience) the difference!

Why is it terrible news?

Because it means we won't have a new stadium for... decades, probably. They already spent $200 million "updating" this stadium like a decade ago. With this chunk that's $600 million in total, or most of the way to what a brand new stadium would cost in a new location. And in a few more years they'll probably be asking for another chunk, like the dunce who keeps throwing $1000 repairs into his old car when even a moron would stop and get a new car.

I don't need to reiterate what a drag Joe Robbie has been to the team as a whole. As I recall it's 1-2 points per game on average since it was built. That's 1-2 points per game that your team has been robbed of for ~25 years. And now it looks like it's going to continue for a few more decades. Who could be joyous about that, except our opponents?

HAving gone to a few of the newer stadiums over the last few years....you can see how poor the Dolphins stadium is...

Screw renovations. The stadium is a freaking dump and needs to be blown to the ground and rebuilt.

The Marlins stole that stadium funding…wow.

The mayor said the county and the team are “close to agreeing to a deal” that needs approval from the county commission. Wonder if it will get the votes. It would be best to just build a new stadium but that would really have a hard time getting approval IMO. If the new seats don't include the plan of moving the seats closer to the field doesn't really do much for me, not sure how aesthetically looking the canopy will be.
