Dolphins Blurbs

One reason for optimism for every team:

Miami Dolphins: Young defensive line talent

The Dolphins' defensive rebuild is starting to take shape on the defensive line. Then-rookie Chop Robinson led Miami with a 78.7 PFF pass-rush grade and 56 pressures last season. He could be even better this season if star edge rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips can return from their respective injuries and play well. 2025 first-round pick Kenneth Grant should add a dynamic presence in the run game, as well.

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill caught passes in position drills -- the first time we've seen him do so since he had surgery on his wrist earlier this offseason. Coach Mike McDaniel told reporters at the combine that the goal was for Hill to be ready by the summer, and he appears to be on pace for that. Hill didn't participate in team drills, but this was still a positive step forward for the receiver after a down year in 2024. -- Marcel Louis-Jacques

Best rookie schematically for each team:

Miami Dolphins: Kenneth Grant, DL, Michigan (No. 13 overall)

I wasn’t a fan of the Dolphins' draft as a whole, but I certainly recognize Grant’s talent and Miami’s need to get bigger and younger on the defensive line. Grant is an impressive athlete for his massive 6-4, 331-pound frame, and he’ll see a lot of single blocks as a rookie with opponents focusing on Zach Sieler and Chop Robinson.

SI has us listed as one of the losers of the offseason:

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins are in the strange position of operating like a rebuilding franchise despite having a quarterback making north of $50 million annually and two wide receivers making nearly $30 million per year apiece.

They have injured pass rushers, an inexperienced secondary if they trade Jalen Ramsey and an offensive line filled with holes. After their aggressive trades didn’t pay off in recent seasons, it might be time for the Dolphins to blow up their roster, including trading Tyreek Hill.

Win projection from PFF for you gamblers:

MIAMI DOLPHINS (8.5): OVER (+135) / UNDER (-160)

What needs to go right: The Dolphins ranked last in EPA per play without Tua Tagovailoa on the field in 2024 — a scenario they can’t afford to repeat. While Miami addressed its offensive line in the offseason, questions remain about the unit’s cohesion. Three new starters are expected up front, including free-agent addition James Daniels (who is returning from a torn Achilles) and first-time starters Patrick Paul and rookie Jonah Savaiinaea. Rapid development and chemistry will be critical.

What could go wrong: Coverage was a consistent issue in 2024, with Miami finishing 26th in PFF’s team coverage grade (55.6). The situation could worsen with Jalen Ramsey’s future in question amid trade rumors. Fifth-round pick Jason Marshall Jr. offers potential, but it’s unlikely he’ll provide the immediate impact needed to stabilize the secondary.

PFF Projection: Under 8.5 wins (-160)

I agree with them, except the time to tear it down was this offseason, no wait, last year's mid season trade deadline

Wilson Continues Being Wilson:

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Wilson threw two interceptions in practice on Tuesday, one of which was returned for a pick-six, and nearly added a third before it was dropped by cornerback Ethan Bonner.

Additionally, one of his screen passes was tipped at the line of scrimmage, and another was nearly intercepted outright. Jackson noted that Wilson continued what he described as an “uneven offseason” — putting it mildly — during Tuesday’s minicamp session.

Dolphins beat reporter Omar Kelly echoed similar concerns, noting that while Wilson’s arm talent remains apparent, his accuracy and decision-making continue to be an issue. Kelly described Wilson as “uneven, much like his NFL career,” highlighting a trend that’s unfortunately followed him since his days in New York.

Really hoping Ewers shows out in preseason and TC, would love him to win the backup QB role, and I think he can be effective even as a rookie due to playing in the SEC and all those big games hes played in vs SEC talent, which is the closest thing you can get to NFL experience without actually being in the league.

I just dont trust Wilson to be an effective backup, hes too wild, we need someone to steady the ship and hes way too hit or miss, mainly miss.

Agree, if I've seen Wilson miss backs on flare-outs in the backfield once, I've seen it a hundred times. He just is not consistent. In McD's offense it's all about timing and consistency. That has never been Wilson's strength. Yes, he will surprise you with a nice bomb every now and again, but he misses the easy ones and takes sacks and fumbles at the most inopportune times. I still find it unbelievable that Wilson was the veteran that the Fins went after with Tua's proclivity to injuries. Mind numbing.

I wouldn't let him play against the Jets at Meth Life, that field eats Achilles tendons for lunch. And keep the goddam safeties away from him! Seriously great news on his progress, I never doubted it for a second.
I thought some teams complained to the NFLPA regarding that stadium. Steve Ross apparently doesn’t consider the value of his investment..the players. It will take another injury to a QB like Josh Allen…

The Jets and Giants owners apparently have weekly conversations about installing a grass field. Climate conditions are a concern, but the driving factor is the number of non-football events and the revenue they bring in, a grass field just wouldn't hold up.

I’m pretty sure they got a new field in 2023 and it’s the same turf that many other teams now use including the Cheatriots and Seachickens.

They did, and people immediately started complaining about the new surface ( many players said it was too "sticky"), even moreso after Rodgers went down week 1 and later in the season when Jaelan tore his Achilles week 12.

Is this a make-or-break year for Tua Tagovailoa?

Not really, since he has $54 million in guaranteed money coming in 2026. But the Miami offense took a step back last season, and the Dolphins missed the playoffs for the first time in three years under coach Mike McDaniel. Tagovailoa's 60.3 QBR ranked 15th. How and whether Tagovailoa and McDaniel recover from a down year will go a long way toward determining how pointed next offseason's questions will be about Tagovailoa.

Those rounding out the top 10 list are Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Jayden Daniels, C.J. Stroud, Josh Allen, Aidan Hutchinson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Micah Parsons and Justin Jefferson. Daniels, the league’s 2024 offensive rookie of the year, earned the highest spot for a rookie quarterback since Tua Tagovailoa in 2021 and is the first rookie QB to finish in the top five since Mac Jones in 2022.
