Dolphins Charles Clay named most disappointing NFL tight end so far

Well not to be a Debbie downer but something else to consider is maybe Clay isn't very bright. Remember he had an awful time learning Sherman's playbook and it was said the Dolphins were disappointed with him in 2012 especially Mike Sherman. In 2013 he seemed to have learned the playbook and was excelling. Maybe he's having a tough time learning Lazor's system. Maybe I'm completely wrong here (I hope so) I just remember disappointment in Clay (and the whole TE group less Fasano) during Hard Knocks.

I can't deny that he's been dissapointing so far.... BUT, it's not like there isn't a reason for his sub-par performance to date. He'll get healthy. He'll get more opportunities. He'll perform better.

Can't refute this.... but I'd be more concerned if this assessment was made a few games after he restored his health to reasonable levels.

I know there have been two would have been big plays where he was hit over the middle nicely in stride and dropped them. Really looked like he was afraid to get hit and protecting himself - that was my take - that he's perhaps ailing more than we may realize. He's a good player and he'll contribute.

All I've noticed about Clay was some decent run blocking and a couple bad drops. Hopefully he gets healed up on the bye and comes back 100%.

If these guys are comparing Clay to the Julius Thomases and Jimmy Grahams then no crap he's not that caliber

Personally I think Clay's stats from last season will not be the norm. He's not enormous or extremely athletic and doesn't challenge the deep middle. I'm not disappointed in him this season because I'm not expecting him to have last season's stats very often, if ever again.

Seems to me he isn't getting many shots while he's been healing up. I've noticed he's been used as a decoy a bit. I would think it's to give him some reps but not risk his health as much. Players from the Chiefs and Bills took a couple dirty shots right at his knees when he got the ball. I imagine in the Packers game he'll get more shots with this extra rest from the bye.

To me it's more an indictment on Lazor than Clay. But last game it looked like Lazor was maybe going away from forcing the offense through Wallace and spreading the ball around which yielded some success. So he might be more involved with the game plan going forward.

Thinking about it more- what do you expect? Two years ago Tanne only had Hartline to throw to so thats about all he did. Then we got Wallace& Gibson which left a mismatch on Clay. This year it seems we have a lot of versatility in pass catchers so the ball is getting spread around. He will have a solid year, but not like last year. There will prob be a lot of guys that have solid years but nothing crazy.

It's been disappointing, but this offense seems to be taking greater advantage of Sims slipping out as a blocker than utilizing Clay as a seam threat. It seems a waste of a weapon since I fully believe Clay was one of the brightest spots of last year and given the opportunity should be able to replicate that.

He has been playing with a knee injury and getting very few opportunities. The bye has come at the right time for Charles to get fully healthy. Don't worry about Charles Clay suddenly becoming a dud, his will contribute.

Hopefully he gets healthy and can contribute. That being said we still need a true pass catching TE and not a hybrid HB/TE.

Might want to check how the sh@@@@ Packer defense has played the last few games

Still not convinced they're a good D at all. They gave up a ton of yards to Chicago despite only giving up 17 points and Minnesota's offense is clearly hurting without Peterson. They are last in the league in rush yards allowed. Lazor's gotta take advantage of that somehow and exploit that weak run D.

I see this as a non-starter of a discussion point. Clay was never really a top 100 player. He isn't a blocker for runs or pass and he runs a very limited route tree. He isn't a size mismatch. He is just a strong fast guy who can run a seam route and a couple other routes.

He has been I jurrd, not gotta much time to practice with the QB nor learn the new offense. He will improve.
