Dolphins Cut aj edds/other moves

I don't get it. Edds has way much more potential than an Ohio State scrub like Spitler could ever dream of. I'm good with adding Cook and Rosario, but why cut Edds?

Just remember that Edds was drafted to be a coverage specialist at LB and then the Dolphins grabbed Kevin Burnett who started as a coverage specialist before becoming a full time linebacker. The Dolphins now have two guys starting at ILB that are both coverage specialists. When was Edds ever going to see the field? In what situations? Both Burnett and Dansby are much better coverage players.

I'm not saying they should have CUT him...you kind of expect a guy that is in his first year off major knee surgery to struggle, and then in that second year is when they reclaim their old glory...they risk a lot by cutting him. But at the same time I've been telling people he's not going to play this year or have any impact, so don't expect much.

Really? AJ Edds cut wow.. did not see that coming...

Sure, but the same goes for Spitler. Both Dansby and Burnett are coverage specialists, that's the way the defense is going to be run this year. So it stands to reason the next guy you want in there in case someone gets injured -- and Burnett has been nicked up in most of the years he's been in the NFL -- would be another coverage specialist in Edds. It doesn't make sense from a special teams standpoint either because I saw Edds making more good plays on kick and punt coverage than Spitler this preseason. I know that's supposed to be Spitler's bread and butter, that's basically all he did in college, but he was only just a guy this preseason.

Just an awful decision. If Spitler gets into the game because of an injury we're going to regret it. He'll be wearing a target.

i wouldn't be surprised new England picks him up

I'm not sure that players like AJ Edds (and dare I say it, P Livas) are really off the team for good.

We do have FOUR TEs and H-Back C Clay. We are not going to keep 4 TEs (I think Mastrud is gone) nor do I think we will keep all of our DEs. We could be waiting for a team to lose a DL and come calling etc.

I'm sure that NFL teams have agreements with players that they might have to cut early in roster moves. The Jests do it all the time for instance.

And he looked quite slow in coverage during the preseason. I would have banked on Spitler or Mitchell going over him but what do I know. I do know Spitler is a good ST guy and Mitchell flashed to me during PS but I would rather cut one of those guys over Edds. I completely get the Cook signing though.

I would like to think you're right, but it doesn't make sense. Why not just cut Mastrud and keep Edds or Livas? I think it's just having idiots in charge of personnel.

Yeah both Dansby and Burnett are great coverage linebackers. Edds probably wasn't going to see any playtime with those guys ahead of him but isn't the point of depth to be there in case someone gets injured?? Now if Dansby/Burnett gets injured, we're back to where we were last year with Spitler/Mitchell who won't be able to cover seam Tight Ends and quick backs out of the backfield.

I'm really shocked by this news. Edds didn't look amazing this preseason but that was expected with him coming off injury. I was hoping this year he'd be able to come along slowly and than maybe next year he could challenge for a starting job.

It's simple guys.. Spitler was picked over Edds for the simple fact that another member mentioned in another thread, splitler took a razor and cut himself when no one was looking in the PS game 4. That right there sold sparano on spitler being a worthy backup. And let's not forgot who they were playing (cowgirls) so sparano decided to roll the dice on spitler.. We should all now go into confession and ask the good lord to deliver Edds to our practice squad. Amen.

"Austin has done a really good job. AJ has missed a chunk of time. Austin has had that time," Sparano said of Spitler. Doesn't justify a dignified response because it is so stupid. There was a reason Edds was drafted in the 4th and Spitler in the 7th, and even that was considered a reach by some.

That's the reasoning behind this? WOW, that's ridiculous. That's like congratulating a kid for getting a "participant" ribbon on Field Day in elementary school. Spitler has shown nothing in his career so far.
