Former QB at Arkansas before switching to TE. He's 6'4" 255. Derby was a 6th round pick of the Patriots in 2015.

If Scott clears waivers I would bet we re-sign him to the practice squad since we have 2 openings on the p-squad.

I Agree that the TE room will be re-worked like Armando stated - I thought they like Gray originally but I'm unsure at this point. That basically leaves almost no TE. I'm still on board with drafting a young TE, but our need list seems to be expanding...

Played in 15 total games in Denver over 2 years with only 4 starts but picked up 384 yard in those games. Certainly worth looking at as a number 2 TE, but can he block?

He was relatively productive for a backup as a receiving threat. In 15 games he was about as productive as Thomas has been starting for us this year. I think it's fair to say his health is a question mark though.

Let me get these all out of the way now.

"Can he play G, can he play QB, can he play LB, can he cover a WR over the middle"

Now, proceed with the discussion about the TE in question.

I followed the Iowa Hawkeye where he played in college. He was more of a receiving TE. Great speed, not asked to block much.

fairly raw still and route running needs some work but good size and athleticism. I
It could be a good pickup if he can stay healthy, very intriguing player that is tough to project as he is still raw at the position.

I have a friend from Las Vegas who is a Broncos fan. I asked about Derby a few minutes ago and this is what he said (summarized):

Very athletic and makes an occasional spectacular play, but not instinctive and can't separate. High hopes entering the season but weaknesses surfaced. Fumbles quite a bit which is what got him in the doghouse with fans. Not bad on special teams. Some Denver fans were surprised when he was let go, but the team has so many problems right now they weren't going to care about the release of a backup tight end, other than ripping Elway for giving away another 5th round pick for nothing.

    ***

That's about it. Only the last part surprised me. I didn't realize they had traded for Derby, or that Denver has a similar tendency to ours in giving away later round picks.

During my friend's summary I couldn't help but thinking that Derby sounds like a tight end version of Devante Parker. And that's not bad, given the price we paid.

Dolphins claimed TE AJ Derby off waivers from the Broncos.

Rashawn Scott was waived in the corresponding roster move. A shoulder injury sidelined Derby earlier this month, but he must be trending toward full health if Miami was willing to use a waiver claim on him. He gives the Fins some depth behind starter Julius Thomas.

My surprise is that now we have 4 TE's and one less WR which is fine. I wonder if he'll even be active. I don't want to put the guy down but we sure do like bringing in guys with injury history. Nothing to lose on this move thought as we didn't give up any picks for him

A.J. Derby‘s tour of the AFC will continue in Miami.

Derby, who was traded from the Patriots to the Broncos last year and waived by the Patriots this year, has been awarded to the Dolphins on waivers.

The Broncos placed Derby on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, then waived him off injured reserve. It’s unclear whether he’ll be healthy enough to play for the Dolphins immediately. He had 19 catches for 224 yards and two touchdowns this season in Denver.

The Dolphins waived wide receiver Rashawn Scott to make room for Derby on the roster.

I like the fact that Gase and the front office is still out there looking to make the roster better even if it's not a splashy move.

    Scott was marginal at best

    I like the move...J.Thomas won't be here next year...Fasano a F.A

I am assuming he will compete with Gray & they will bring someone else in F.A or draft

weird about Scott tho with the coaching staff carrying 6 wr's these past 2 years for him.

    PRO DAY RESULTS

    40-yard dash: 4.69 and 4.75 seconds
    20-yard short shuttle: 4.51 seconds
    Three-cone drill: 6.99 seconds
    ANALYSIS
    STRENGTHS
Big, physical and fast. Athletic in space with ability to create some separation out of breaks. Has speed after catch in open field. Posted impressive 54-yard touchdown catch and run against Alabama secondary that struggled to catch him. Can line up all over the field. Natural pass-catcher. Had only one drop during 2014 season. Showed willingness to catch throws over the middle and take the punishment. Unique perspective after playing quarterback and linebacker before move to tight end. Ability to add roster depth at two positions as emergency quarterback. Comes from football bloodlines. Father and uncle had stops in the NFL and his brother lettered at Iowa.
    WEAKNESSES
Has only one year of tight end experience. Routes have very little polish to them. He needs time to learn the nuances of position. Run blocking very much a work in progress. Uses poor hand placement and fails to sustain blocks when in-line. Balance at contact needs to improve when blocking in spaces. Has habit of using one rather than two hands for difficult catches. Was unable to play in final game (Texas Bowl) due to knee injury and continues to heal.

Good backup TE option. Still need a starter, preferably in the draft next year. Rookie, Derby, Fasano.

I just don't get you guys. All that bitching about having a crap roster and we should draft this guy and that guy and we pick up a young kid on a position of need nobody of you have heard of before. This is like a draft pick without spending a draft pick with the advantage of this kid having some experience and can be further evaluated this year. What is the downside? Why that mocking? NE is known to rummage through other teams garbage piles.
