Here's an interesting topic for discussion which was brought up in the World Cup posts. On average, NFL players only actually play 11 minutes of each game, as per the Wall Street Journal.

The heat and humidity will drain anyone just standing still but, how much does it really matter for an athlete who is in good condition in short time spans?

Based o this, one would think that Phans would have more of an impact on the team.

i don't understand, how would dolphins fans have more of an impact on the team, if they are sitting in the humidity and sun? unless you mean a negative impact?

By cheering to inspire, as some other teams do.

Doesn't the team have to do something to give the fans to cheer about first?

My boy Timmy Duncan is coming back for another year, what a beast.

football is not just physically draining it is mentally draining as well. In those 11 minutes they are battling w/ huge, incredible athletes rather than getting a stiff wind and falling down as if they got shot like in soccer. also you have the mental part of the game, they run a play for 6-10 seconds where their bodies are beat up then they have a quick turnaround to get the play in, recognize formations, recognize plays and go at it again unlike. All of this will drain a player no matter what his physical condition and the humidity in Miami in Sept is a huge advantage for afternoon starts.

I am watching this world cup and this notion that players are running for 90 minutes(plus injury time!) is comical. they run a lot but they walk a lot and stand around a lot too plus get their fake injury breaks as well.

I have never met a fan group of a sport so damn sensitive like those of soccer fans. It's comical, and you're right. It's a crime and blasphemous to most of these guys if you don't like soccer. IDGAF if you like my sport or not, but I'm definitely not going to crucify you for having an opinion....unless I was a soccer fan. :ponder:

Whether you like soccer or not, maybe you two should try running on a soccer field for five minutes, see how comical and easy it is.

Why do you assume that I haven't? It's overrated, in my opinion. People overseas and below the equator grow up with it though, and have a true passion for it...nothing against that, and I have the same passion for American Football. No need to bash each other over it.

You think the level of physical exertion in soccer is overrated? You literally don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about.

You literally don't have the faintest idea what you are talking about...I said nothing about the physical exhaustion being overrated...there is exhaustion in every real sport. Conditioning is a major part of being an athlete, no need to emphasis it as much as you do. It's obvious, no one is denying it. I am just saying that the sport is overrated IMO, it's brutally boring to watch on TV.

Let's see how this started: thread starts with a link to an article saying how much players from each sport run, a guy responds saying how comical the effort soccer players put in is, and you second that it is comical. Explain to me how are you not talking talking about physical exertion.

I'll tell you what no one here is talking about: how they like soccer or not.

you must read more carefully, I didn't say the effort is comical. I said the notion that soccer players run for 90 minutes is comical. They spend a good portion of the game stopped or walking. That is not saying you don't have to be in phenomenal shape or that there isn't a lot of running involved but soccer fans like to pretend like football players are always stopping and soccer players go nonstop which just isn't true.
