you must read more carefully, I didn't say the effort is comical. I said the notion that soccer players run for 90 minutes is comical. They spend a good portion of the game stopped or walking. That is not saying you don't have to be in phenomenal shape or that there isn't a lot of running involved but soccer fans like to pretend like football players are always stopping and soccer players go nonstop which just isn't true.
Now I'm thinking everyone here should read more carefully, because nobody ever said soccer players run for 90 minutes No human could do that -in a marathon, yes, but not on a soccer field where you have to stop and go all the time. If someone had actually said that, then I might have understood your meaning from the start.
To get back on topic, even though football players only actually play 11 minutes, contact is very tiring. IMO that's why the only players who usually get a breather are RBs and DL. WRs and CBs, on the other hand, have little reason to get exhausted. I'm pretty sure this is why when a team is tired, it shows as inability to stop the run and inability to rush the passer.
