Dolphins offensive line coach Matt Applebaum explains plan and mission: ‘A lot of things need to get better.’ And why last years OL coach was retained

Answers:
Why was JeanPierre retained?
“It starts with he’s a phenomenal guy,” Applebaum said. “This is a people business, and we’ve got to work with people on our staff very closely all day long. To be around quality people is a very underrated element. It starts with that. Next thing I would say is the guy is a good football coach. “I talked football with him and I’ve been impressed by him. So those are some things. Familiarity with the personnel, that certainly doesn’t hurt. But he’s a great guy and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
Applebaum said,
The Dolphins will implement a zone blocking scheme, and Applebaum said “there’s a certain level of athleticism needed to play in the run scheme we’re talking about. Like a twitchiness, suddenness, ability to bend, change directions. You obviously need a certain level of size, too. There’s a premium on a certain level of athlete. There’s a mental processing that I think is important regardless of scheme. And a physical toughness. “This is a scheme where you have to try to get after your opponent consistently throughout the play. It’s not the kind of thing where you can wall a guy off and the play is over for you. That ball can go a lot of places and it happens later on in the play so you’ve really got to strain.”

Applebaum hits on a key item: this offense and zone blocking scheme requires a different level of lineman as far as athleticism goes. This is going to immediately eliminate some guys on this roster, such as Austin Jackson. He possesses none of the athleticism of movement required for either a tackle or especially a guard in a zone scheme. Jessie Davis? Goodbye. Meat maulers like Kindley? Thin ice. This could take 2 years at best to properly build.
Good call, coach. But we all know what opinions compare to, and that's what this is.

Did you mean to quote me while bashing Jacksons? Were you just adding to my post?
You stated he was athletic, no?

Did you see the video I posted? Where do you see his athleticism at in that video? His feet are slow, he does a poor job of hitting moving targets, not strong enough and his hand placement is terrible..

I really don’t care that analysts or scouts said he was athletic coming out of USC, after watching that game tape, he doesn’t appear to be very athletic.

This is a read & react sport, you can be very athletic and test very well at the combine but if you don’t have the football IQ then no amount of coaching is going to help you because the NFL plays at a much faster pace then college.

I didn’t say he was good at football. In fact I said the opposite. His IQ and technique is why he’s bad in space. He is slow to react. That doesn’t mean he’s not athletic in his frame.

I quoted and responded to someone that said he wasn’t athletic enough to play in this scheme. Which from a pure athleticism stand point is wrong. He’s not good enough to play in any scheme right now. But not because of athleticism.

So he's a good guy? And knows football.... Hmm, so who was failing with the Line last year? Did orders come down that I want our guys taught this way and this technique? Kinda doubt it, but who knows?. Definitely an interesting retention here. Maybe the coach can be coached up in a different scheme =)

The thing is, LJP played in, and was brought up coaching in the ZBS. I dont even think we had a ****ing blocking scheme or offensive scheme last year, just for most part, get it out quick as possible to waddle. The guys were using techniques that were all over the place and probably for different schemes. It was his first time being the man, and he's behind a cluster**** of an offensive system where you have no clue what kind of system, whos calling plays, what the end game is or thoughts behind what the **** you are doing.

There are alot of people in the league that are better as assistants or coordinators instead of being the man. They are knowledgeable just lack one or two aspects that keep them from excelling in the position above them, maybe hit is LJP when he talked to Applebaum. Applebaum might've come out across like "oh **** he does know the ZBS, they should've tried it more or let him focus on that"

or #2/... he threw everyone under the bus to save his ass. "I told that black mf'er Flo we needed to cut Davis, but he kept saying play him"...Grier sitting in the back "yes yes so you hate Flo continue",

Seriously what happened with this kid.

He looked promising his rookie year prior to his injury.

I don't get it. He blocked eichenberg better than any defender on that play. He atleast touched Eich.

Gaskin didn't help his case either on that play.

Amazed Tua was able to get rid of the ball.

Sad part is, Tua evades Jackson's guy only to get pummeled by Daviss guy.

If our line was coached to just fall to the ground at the feet of the defenders, they would have done better.

What happened to putting your players in a position to succeed?

As someone already said above me, Jackson is very athletic. That’s why he was considered a good prospect despite not being technically sound or all that good yet.
I cant comment on Jackson’s athletic ability or lack of. But if he is not at least good depth next year I bet he is gone

The main reason he was kept was definitely familiarity with the guys. Maybe he is a good football coach and was in a bad situation.
Maybe. The real answer probably lies in the opinions of the offensive linemen themselves and the other assistant coaches. I doubt we will ever have that information.
