Dolphins OL continues to struggle

We have to understand that the O lineman have to do more than just pass protect for Tannehill. How effective they are with all the other plays Lazor is drawing up, other than Tannehill dropping back to pass, is what will dictate how well this offense performs overall, and how many games we'll win, imo.

I am shocked that the Mods have not moved the thread to up top in "BREAKING NEWS!!!'' JK/LOL

this is training camp, this the place where they should get better, every team are for the most part having these same issues, please let this play out.

We will know next to nothing until the first few games of the regular season. In practice, everyone know what they are practicing for, it's either pass protect or run blocking but, very seldom vs both. In preseason, everything is vanilla with 2nd and 3rd team players coming in and out.

Then comes opening day, when everyone goes all out, and coaches like Mr Bill have had a month to sort out how to take advantage of what the OL has or does not have. It's a whole different game.

While I was never a fan of James before or after we drafted him ... what's done is done. We didnt trade up for Lewan. Zack Martin didn't fall to us. JuWan James is the guy.

I like his length and he seems to have a decent attitude and desire to improve. But, he isn't a good run blocker and he is going to take his lumps in pass pro until he learns to play at an NFL level. Going against Wake is good for him ... even if it means learning by getting whooped.

Albert looks fine with pads on. It's early and he is showing solidly.

Colledge looks great. He is a stopgap for a year or two, but he is a solid player and brings dependability to the left side. He can open running lanes and provide decent pass pro ... and right now we need both.

I wasn't and am not convinced about Dallas Thomas. My fingers are crossed.

Smith has potential, but the kid is very unpolished. If we are rolling the dice with the Smith experiment (much like we did with JMart at LT last year), we need to be understanding at the pass pro gaffes. He is very much a work in progress regardless of whether he is playing RG or OC.

I like Turner's potential and attitude, but the kid is raw. When the coach says you don't understand leverage as an OL ... that needs to be a wakeup call. Time to dramatically improve your technique or start looking for another job.

He is guaranteed a roster spot this year, but not next. The kid has length, movement, tenacity and nasty ... but at the end of the day the OL is all about technique and leverage. That is THE reason why there are so many busts with athleticism and sleepers without athleticism every year.

I guess this is the result of being frugal on OL in free agency and drafting a bunch of reaches. It'd sure be nice if there were someone like Bryant McKinnie available to bring in, if for nothing else, quality depth. I have a strong feeling its going to be another long season for Tannehill.

 Which is it? Don't be frugal in FA ($$$ Albert ... ?), or bring in a broke down old McKinnie?

I'm really not sure what you're trying to say here.

he is available to bring in. he remains an unsigned free agent, available to all 32 teams. give hickey a buzz, maybe he'll sign him for ya.

I wish someone would just follow these writers around and critically write about every mistake they make on a daily basis. This is why we have Training Camp guys, give it a chance to develop. No patience in this instant gratification society anymore.

The tackles are set. James is a rookie. What in gods friggin name does any one really expect vs. the quickest bender in the league? I am happy is in there learning against the best. Friggin Nick Solder has to hold wake in every game and he gets away with it half the time.

James is a big boy with the right tude. Miles above last year with Martin/Clabo. Upside is there. Only time will make him better. Garner is insurance all day. My one concern is back up LT. Lets face it, Albert aint playing every game this year. At least that's my bet.

The Guards all have talent. If Dallas actually shows well in preseason then we have stability. Brenner is good for 3-4 games. Shelly Smith is just someone I wonder about especially since he is having to play Center. Not sure he will pan out long term. But then you have Turner who will eventually work his way in and we made a pretty good pick up in Colledge.

I see much more stability and less questions in the character dept. People will argue Pouncey is a head case. Not really. He doesn't ever seem to be in too much trouble. The people he supports are in question but hey, he aint an owner who does drugs, a player who beats his fiancé, or has done PED's, so I see Pouncey coming back in game 6 or so and by that time things will be hummin.

This situation is a lot better than last year minus some backup spots or injury to Pouncey. I think Lazor's O will counterbalance some of the weaknesses.

Also I live a few miles from Bills camp. They are saying the same thing every team in the league is saying....the defense is naturally ahead of the O. But the way we are spreading out the O, I think we are ahead of more teams than people think.

Interesting take. Has to be pretty cool to already have the knowledge that the draft picks were all reaches.

Don't know who this guy is but he liked what he saw of the o-line:

Rookie right tackle Ja’Wuan James looked like a veteran. I did notice that he was a little slow on his first step, but was able to regain the ground that he lost very fast and when you go up against a pro bowler like Cameron Wake everyday, every snap is a fight for dominance. And speaking of pro bowlers, acquired free agent left tackle Branden Albert looked like a human from another world, locking down the left side.

Practice Saturday was clean, crisp and mistake free. I hope to see all of the other ones like Saturday’s practice.
