Dolphins preparing themselves to pay Eugene Monroe top LT money

Perennial contender no longer applies to the Ravens. They were a non-playoff team last year just like us and so far have never made the playoffs without Ray Lewis...they've got to prove they can win without the heart and soul of their team for over a decade. Not to mention they have nearly as many question marks on the team as we do.

Morgan Moses fits the scheme and can play both sides. If I went left tackle in free agency I'd go right tackle through the draft.

Morgan Moses looked very stiff and struggled in some drills at the combine. Doesn't look like a scheme fit to me and I think he may only be a RT in the NFL.

This is complete bull****.. The dolphins are willing to break the bank for a Monroe, but let a better LT in Jake Long slip right through their grasps at less than that last year...
Who was the GM last year? Who is the GM this year? There's your answer.

Ravens can Thank themselves for not being able to afford Eugene.....with that ridiculous contract they gave Joe Flaccid!!!

True and Flacco had them between a rock and a hard place. Flacco, selfishly, wanted to be the top paid QB and I think the Ravens didn't want to pay him that much but how do you let a QB walk after winning the super bowl? And really no depth behind him. Flacco went down a few notches in my book with that move.

I couldnt agree more. We could have had Jake for 9mil last year.......and maybe a win or two more, with a playoff birth. Yet another bonehead move by Ireland. That guy seemed to offend everyone...

jake long gets hurt now a days just looking at the opposition...he's close to done...no loss there...the rams wouldn't surprise me if they cut him and drafted his replacement with their #2 pick...i dont know what the cap hit is with long but that was a bad contract

eugene monroe at 5 years and $50 mil i bet it's every bit of $28 mil guaranteed at that number given his age...

morgan moses is definitely not an ideal move fit for our oline coach...

This is a great point. They were forced to way overpay for Joe Flacco as if he were a mega elite superstar. Flacco timed the title perfectly. Ray Rice is in decline and obviously has sproblems. Denny Pitta is solid but they gave him a big K. Their receivers are ok and their O line blows. Defensively, they have a good scheme and some decent talent, but nothing scary.

The Ravens are in decline and you will see Cleveland and Baltimore pass like two ships in the night in the next couple of years. Cleveland has some good young talent so if they can get a qb, they could be set up for success. Harbaugh is a decent coach but he's not exactly a rocket scientist in trems of Xs and Os. He's more of a leader, motivator, who has a tough, smart, team. That only works when you have great character guys in terms of leadership, toughness, etc. But he's lost Lewis and Reed as tremendous leaders. Harbaugh is not the type of coach that can overcome these losses with X's and O's.

If Monroe's agent has any ability to project, he will see through all of this.

Teams aren't going to be as hesitant to spend big in FA this year. They see the cap going up and analysts are expecting the cap to rise to north of 150m in the next 2 years.

I'm fine with the Fins paying Mornore what he wants. He's young, healthy and a quality player that is a solid locker room guy (from what I've read). He excells in the ZBS, he is a perfect fit for us. We need to protect our QB. This is a good way to spend our cap space.

We have one of the youngest rosters in the league and a terrific cap position. You don't get awarded any wins for being under the cap and you can't get away with a roster that doesn't have at least two or three "overpaid" players on it. There's no avoiding the harsh reality that all teams will have to pay to fill a glaring need, or overpay to keep a key piece. It's inevitable for everybody and the beauty of Miami's situation is that they can afford it.

We shouldn't care what the price is, seriously. We either sign him (or somebody like him) or we struggle again for another season/s. It's that simple and all the deal permutations in the world can't hide the fact that the need is glaring. Sign him, allow yourself a smile and then move on to fix the rest of the line.

I guess what this comes down to is, are you more comfortable with paying Monroe big money than you would have been with paying Jake Long big money?

My answer would be an unequivocal yes, and simply because Long can't stay healthy whereas Monroe has been very durable.

i dont know how you are gonna get out of a 5 year $50 million one with likely over half that guaranteed no matter what you do in the first 3 years...just a leap of faith i guess...i'm sure we will see some mega $15 mil plus 2nd year cap hit like we did with wallace though...

just gotta hope like hell that the player doesnt go belly up within the first few years of the deal at least...given the age with monroe it would seem like we'd be ok i guess but i don't much like paying not special special money in free agency...

Monroe is 26 and to my knowledge has never had injury problems. For comparison, last offseason the team nearly traded a 2nd round pick for Brandon Albert and paid him huge money, even though he's 28 and has back problems. I do think Monroe is our best option, even if we have to overpay.

The Rams protected themselves with an injury clause. Jake Long is now only guaranteed half of his original pay for 2014 because he finished 2013 on injured reserve. They could very well be drafting an OT with their 1st pick, and can easily get out of the Jake Long contract.

what's the cap number if they keep him this year vs let him go??? cause if it's close i'd absolutely cut him...

Article says $7.75 to cut him and $9.25 million to keep him. Being that he had an ACL and MCL tear in late December, I'm not even sure if he could start the season opener in 2014. I'd cut him and draft a replacement if I were St. Louis.

And although St Louis got shafted in the Jake Long contract, at least they protected themselves against injury, which is exactly where Tampa Bay got into trouble with Carl Nicks.

yeah but nicks didnt have that kind of injury history and thus didnt have to take that in the contract...eugene monroe wouldn't either...jake long did...

if i'm the rams i'm cutting jake long

Good. Pay the man. We need him and he's the best option available.
