Dolphins releasing Pat Devlin

I agree. This sounds like a Lazor decision and he just said "enough". Maybe Quinn's just a Camp Arm, but maybe it also sends a message to some other players to lift your game, maybe it also sends a message to QB Coach, Zack Taylor, who spent the past 3 seasons developing Devlin as the #3. Memo to Zack - Lazor had your position in Philly. He knows what a good QB Coach does in the job. BTW - Mike left the bubble 7 months ago.
He should have been fired along with the rest of them. Not sure how one gets a job as a QB coach even they had absolutely no experience coaching QBs.. Especially getting the job to coach a rookie QB. Makes no sense

That is why we are such losers. We don't draft quinn, then we bring him in 7 years later after he proves he's a bust. And we keep Lobado, and cut Devlin who at least has promise. We have no clue. Philbin can go next. Hopefully Devlin gets his chance in the NFL and shows us all.
All hail Devlin. We are such losers for waiving him. Man did that guy show so much promise. He was poised in the pocket, had an incredible deep ball... Marino couldn't hold Pat Devlin's jock

This is one of the things that excited me about the Lazor hire, he would be a fresh set of eyes on the QB coaching, if he liked what he saw he could just say carry on, if he wanted to add a few pointers he could chime in and if he thought Zac Taylor was terrible Lazor would probably just take over the duties of teaching Tannehill himself. Philbin said as much in a presser, he said he wanted Lazor specifically to help get Tannehill to the next level.

So why haven't we just fired Taylor then, you're probably thinking? I don't know what the whole job description of a QB coach entails but I would imagine even if deemed incompetent as a teacher he could be kept on to do the grunt work like film cut-ups and stuff because Lazor's plate is obviously pretty full. Basically he's been demoted from "QB coach" to Lazor's assistant, which is still a win-win-- the organization gets the benefit of having a real QB coach teach Tannehill and Taylor just became the protege of a very good QB coach.

I said some time ago I suspected a few surprise cuts this year. This team has too much young promising talent from this year's class to simply cut and watch someone else develop. The whole "only keep 2 QB" posts has now been validated in my eyes. I don't think Hickey is finished manufacturing roster spots.

Guys like Terrence Fede, Chris McCain, Jordan Tripp, A.J. Francis, Anthony Johnson, Tyler Larsen, Gator Hoskins, Arthur Lynch, Damien Williams, Armon Binns, Matt Hazel, Damian Williams and Kyle Miller make it hard enough to keep only 2 or 3. But when you have a glut of mediocre performers chewing up rosters spots who have maximized their talent and are chewing up larger chunks of salary cap.... it's time to rethink the benefit of keeping Pat Devlin, Daniel Thomas, Philip Wheeler and Dannell Ellerbe for yet another year.

I'm glad we are finally at a point where these types of decisions can be made due to depth. When you have the bottom side of your roster forcing you to turn over the middle of your roster, you've got some promising talent being drafted and acquired.

I can't help but think Shelley Smith is fighting for a roster spot. And I can't say he is on the winning side right now. It seems to me "The Experiment" and his constant movement around the line says more about the guys beating him out of those spots than is does his versatility. I still think Tyler Larsen is quietly being developed as a long term solution. And I believe his lack of opportunities with the 1's and 2's is merely due to the staff's contentment of his role this year and getting a vet to patch the roster hole in front of him to allow him to develop.

Hickey has created a problem for himself, he did too well finding talent in the draft and UDFA. Now he's got some hard choices to make. But I foresee most of the names I listed above to be on the 53.

I think it can't be overstated that losing the last 2 games last year will be answered with surprise cuts to keep rookies and send a message that 8 - 8 is not good enough. And the staff is not okay with it. I think there is a message being sent that continuing to settle for average is not good enough.

We've got some big contracts coming up in the next year or two. With such a bumper crop of promising young talent and a few dead weight contracts, I think Hickey is about to cut a few more guys most will be pleasantly surprised to see go. Wheeler, Ellerbe and Smith are on the radar IMO.

This guy has an agenda and sticks to his guns...good for him. I hope your precious Devlin goes to the Jets and you go root for them. Thanks.

I guess now we'll see some posts that said if Brady Quinn was the starter instead Miami would've won 11 games. That's different at least.

Arright...I like Devlin and all...but this is a little over the top.

:sidelol: this guy

If he's going out on the waiver wire, I'd be surprised if first up Houston didn't grab him for a close look.

Maybe but they have a young QB names Savage that is considered to have much more upside and is a current 4th round pick

I attended Training Camp this morning. Brady Quinn actually looked quite decent. Even Lobato made a few nice throws.
I have always been something of a Matt Moore supporter (and I still am). However, there is a possibility if Brady Quinn does pretty well, that Matt Moore could be cut and the team banks the savings towards paying megabucks for Tannehill in the future.
Two days ago I would have the said the possibility of cutting Moore for Quinn was ridiculous. However, I'm not so sure now. Brady Quinn's appearance on the roster could be to send a message to Matt Moore that they want to see a lot more to earn the $5M+ salary.

One practice and Quinn has potential to unseat. Makes sense.

At the end of the day though what you're pointing out is blatantly obvious. If anybody outplayed Moore at his salary he'd likely get cut. But would that guy really be Quinn? You mean the guy who was forced to take a TV job because nobody previously wanted him?

High doubtful. Should've drafted a back up if they wanted to save money.
