Dolphins second lowest penalized team in the NFL

Yep, posted this in the Joe Philbin thread earlier this week.

We are 2nd in least penalties per game and 1st in penalty yardage against with only 37.4 yards per game

Last year we were 3rd best in penalties per game and 5th best in yardage against.

So we have been in the top of the league in this category for both of Philbins years and improving.

This is not a huge improvement from the Sporano tenure. We we pretty good back then also.

Year - Penalties - Yards

2008 - 13th - 12th
2009 - 5th - 4th
2010 - 2nd - 2nd
2011 - 6th - 10th
2012 - 3rd - 5th
2013 - 2nd - 1st

That is a pretty impressive 5 years.

The penalty I really hate for the Dolphins is illegal push to the back on a kickoff or punt. Especially when it happens away from the play.

They always seem to nullify a big play and as a result the Fins get the ball between the goal line and the 10 yard line.

The player committing such a dumb penalty ought to be benched for the rest of the game.

Agree, I bet when our KO return goes past the 20 yard line, or a punt is returned more than 10 yard, we are getting flagged more than 50% of the time. It's horrendous how frequently our special teams are flagged for hold or illegal block. This really needs to be fixed. There was one instance where we started at our 6 instead of our 35 yard line during a highly important series. Yes, we won, but that kind of yardage for THIS team is enormous. Maybe not to NE or Denver, but to us that's 2.9 first downs lol.

pretty sure we were the least penalized last season. not 100% on that

oops… nevermind.
thanks, Fins1971

With a offense giving up the sacks they do, its a good thing they are sound in the fundamentals. Imagine a team giving up 40+ sacks, and getting penalties. Not a good thing.

Just another reason, I like Philbin.

tell tale sign of a well coached football team...joe philbin take a bow...jim schwartz part of the reason you will be fired come seasons end...lack of discipline
I didn't tend to notice that Miami was doing so well in this category, but watching the Lions the other night I saw some silly penalties that they gave away and immediately thought - at least we're a lot more disciplined than that team. Schwartz has improved the Lions but for all of the great draft picks accumulated over a long time, they are ill-disciplined and going nowhere. Hooshoops is right, again!

An amazing accomplishment when you factor in that it is illegal to penalize the Patriots for pass interference.

Eversince philbin came we never commit a lot of penalties. Good coaching keeping the players playing penalty free football

Very interesting. So the Lions screw themselves because of penalties. Miami doesn't with penalties but with other factors such as bad QBs and coaches who are in over their heads (prior to 2012 that is).

Trusnik is good for a few blocking in the back penalties every year. he needs to run a few miles around the practice field waving a yellow flag.

i'm surprised penalties have been called against the Patriots. that is outrageous.
