Dolphins sign James Daniels

My bad, I thought I looked at over the cap just before I posted and saw Metcalf’s cap number on there with the 63 mil. I just looked again and now it it’s there. I apologize. Still have plenty of cap space left though.
They kinda have to pay a QB, too. Don’t they? And neither Wilson nor Rodgers will be on long-term deals to make the cap game easier. So…..

So you are saying they were just too tight against the cap that they let Daniels walk for 3.4 mil this year because they need to sign a Qb for 40 mil when they currently have 48 mil, Ok 🤦‍♂️. They can restructure like we do though to find extra $$ for this season, no?

Paying 3.4 mil to a player for year 1 of a 3 year contract isn’t going to cripple them when they have 164 mil in cap space next season, no?

Pitt has a habit of letting players move on earlier than some teams. They drafted the replacements last year and may go there again this. That's the way they do it and it has worked more often than not. They still have a ton of money to spend.

There is a lot more going on Pittsburgh than simply the weighing of a QB contract vs. Daniels. I was simply making the point that they will have to pay someone to play the position.

They let Harris walk. They’ve also lost a few other free agents. TJ Watt became a $40m+ AAV over the past few days. And realistically, the Steelers have always been a franchise that let free agents walk and get paid elsewhere.

But hey, you’ve got it all figured out.

it isnt a matter of were they going to pay them or not. They had already drafted his replacement. either way you look at it, it is bad business for Daniels or the Steelers.

Do the Steelers offer him the same contract as we did "because they have the money" Thats alot of money to pay for a guy to mentor a second year guy to take his position.

Secondly, if you are Daniels, it would not increase the value of his next contract if he was to resign with the Steelers. In Miami, if healthy, he's pencilled in as the day one starter (im assuming) which gives him a chance to maximize his value since he's still fairly young. If you are on your last contract, sure go for the job that might be a little bit more cooshy

Good franchises arent wasteful with money just because they have it. If they go Aaron Rodgers at QB, they are going to prob try to stock up on quiet a few 2 year win now vets that they kind back load a lot of that money into next years cap

There is probably alot going on in Pittsburgh but a 3.4 mil contract for Daniels isn’t going to break their 🏦.

They let Harris walk. Do you think if Harris played his position like Watt does his, they would let Harris walk?

They historically let players walk like Joey Porter, when they KNOW his play is declining but other teams like the Dolphins over pay, when that player hits free agency.

I don’t have anything figured out, I was just posing a initial question as to why would the Steelers let a top free agent @ his position walk when said free agent wasn’t commanding a kings ransom?

When he hasn’t been nominated for a single pro bowl in his NFL career and someone says we are getting an All-Pro, that doesn’t paint the correct narrative either. 😂

Dude is coming off major injury and is being asked to play in a zone scheme, you don’t think there is any risk with this signing considering his former team, which is a pretty well run organization (Steelers) that has $65 mill in cap space, let him walk instead of resigning him?
All true sir

Betting odds on this guy making it through camp?

You can’t celebrate a nimble behemoth coming off a TORN achilles or you shouldn’t, I should say. But this is Miami, where we’re so thirsty we’ll drink the sand & swear it’s quenched the thirst.

I don’t care if his Madden scores are 99 across the board. You bought a badly crashed Porsche & now have to 🤞 the repairs hold up.
Def risky

The question has been answered by others multiple times now.

The Steelers have let plenty of players walk who were not “declining.” They reload to avoid overpaying.

The guy was just retweeting himself from a 2022 tweet when he wanted Miami to go after Daniels.
Ahh, he was def not wrong back then. I wonder if Grier even tried. Man, if we'd have had him between Armstead and Connor the line would have been elite.

I saw a report yesterday that said Miami got medical confirmation on Daniels before signing and he's supposed to be cleared for football activity this summer
Come on now, how dare you suggest Grier and his crew did their due diligence. Many here would have you believe he just throws money haphazardly at any player recently injured.

That drafted a 4th rounder, Mason McCormik. He started after Daniels went down for the rest of the 2024 season and didn’t grade out that well. You mean to tell me if Daniels, who played very well in his 1st 4 games last season, is totally healthy, he would not be a cheap (3.4 mil in year one) and a huge upgrade at a position the Steelers typically emphasize with regard to their offense?

Could it be that the Steelers didn’t want the risk associated with Daniels and will have to bite the bullet with their less than league average 2nd year player in McCormik, or upgrade with someone else?

He graded out as the 54 guard out of 77 guards last season.
