Dolphins sign shelley

TBH I'm surprised all the free agents that have signed so far in the league have signed so quick. Did Albert go elsewhere before Miami? Mitchell and Miami? Decker and the Jets? Ware and Denver? Etc...

I thought it used to be that guys would have numerous suitors and they'd take some time in deciding. I guess the technology today makes it easier?

Good point. I think technology and the legal tampering period has a lot to do with that as well. Now you know what offers you'll be getting beforehand and you and your agent can weed out the BS offers that you don't like prior to the visit.

I think Albert wanted to play here. Already lives here, knew we wanted him last year and we were the first to contact him this year...he felt the love in other words.

Mitchell had the Chargers contact him but he said he wanted to play in the 4-3 and not the 3-4 which is what the Chargers run and what he played in with Houston. Miami made the most sense.

Decker said from day 1...he was going to sign with whoever offered him the most money. Not to mention I hear he has a reality show now with his wife so why not go to the largest market in the U.S. help his wife's career in the process. He's obviously not concerned about who's throwing him the ball.

Ware and Denver...well Denver just jumped on that and gave him some ridiculous money. 3 years/$30 million with $20 million guaranteed?? Nuts.

I think a lot of guys used to sign with the first team they visited just because those teams gave them a lot of money and usually because there was some connection. Outside of money the #1 reason a free agent signs with another team is because they have a familiarity with a coach or a scheme.

I know the Dolphins need a G and this guy has....potential, but lets not act like if he doesn't sign the Dolphins missed out on an all-pro...

I'm high on Martin but how in the world can you call him an All-Pro? Dude hasn't seen NFL caliber D-lines yet but he's an all pro?

smh

Nothing is life is guaranteed, but Martin performs like a Mankins clone.

I think with Albert, Hickey, apparently as well as the rest of the league knew what Monroe confirmed yesterday: that he had no serious intention of leaving the Ravens (and obviously looking for offers to bring back to OZZie to match). Unfortunately I think Ireland would have fallen for that, so props to Hickey for being decisively preemptive in zeroing in on Albert and signing him immediately. With the Saffold Oakland deal being abrogated and considering the Raiders bottomless wallet, if Albert were on the market, it's more likely than not he'd have extracted from them whatever he wanted.

As far as Decker is concerned, he got paid nicely for a number 2 or 3 WR, so a bird in the hand was certainly worth 2 in the bush, especially considering that after spending $64mil in FA, Elway, who knows a thing or two about WRs didn't even make him an offer and with his and his country singing wife's reality show as a consideration, New Jersey was a convenient landing spot so long as he got the high end of his $expectations. So there were extenuating circumstances there.

I think it's a bit early to say what Dallas is capable of. We invested a third round pick on him, second on Taylor, and another third on Will Davis. These midround picks aren't garbage picks, they're valuable and they have to develop and contribute, like now. Second year in the league, full offseason to get up to speed. It's time. We will not be able to build a team only through free agency, sorry this isn't the MLB. We need our midround picks to contribute and become solid to great for us.

So I'll be holding out judgment on Thomas till after this offseason.

Just because he was a third round pick doesn't mean it wasn't a garbage pick. Consider who picked him

I never said Will Davis and Jamar Taylor are garbage picks. I just know that with zero depth we had last year and with an undrafted rookie starting over Thomas it showed his value.. We'll see this year for sure, but i'm not betting on this guy being anything other than a backup, if even that.

Agent > OL coach. Putting to much stock into past ties.

I am a lil bit. That's why i said...if he's worth it...because if he is, Benton will tell Hickey&Philbin that and they'll hopefully do what they can to sign him short of breaking the bank.

The OL coach connection is all well and good... except you guys are talking about the wrong Smith... Shelley Smith played for the Rams, not the Texans. You all are thinking of Wade Smith.

*EDIT - My mistake... didn't read everything. Didn't know Houston drafted him, just saw Nubz comment on page 2...

"Have to think our odds of getting him are good. He is in our building right now, has an offer, played for our o-line coach in Houston and we offer him a good shot at being a starter."

Shelley Smith was drafted by the Texans (6th round) our current OL coach was there at that time so he coached him.

Though we should sign wade smith as well.. at the very least as competition for a startung spot
