That's cute. A little jill's fan sees a still shot pic and thinks he can diagnose the defense. If you would have seen the development of the offense through out the game, you would know it was actually a great play call by Lazor.
8:59 in the first quarter 2nd & 1, we line up in the exact same formation in which Wallace scored the touchdown on the bubble screen in the second quarter; trips bunch right, RB lines up strongside. The Raiders are playing a 4-2-5; the "Will" LB follows TE Clay outside the hashmarks; "Sam" LB stays home with Miller. Lamar Miller motions to the weak side, takes the handoff, cuts back inside and picks up the first with a 21 yard run.
Fast forward to the second quarter 14:24. Same formation trips bunch right, also 2nd down. There are two CBs and a FS playing over top of the 3 wide bunch; right before the snap the "Will" LB and Nickel CB come down to show blitz with the CB and FS still playing over the top of the bunch formation. Miller motions again to the weak side (at this moment is what the pic shows) and at the snap the CB blitzes but the "Will" LB is held in via play action despite his assignment being Clay on the perimeter. RT slings out the quick bubble screen to Wallace for the TD, negating the corner blitz and causing confusion to the "Will" LB with the play action pass.
You will rarely ever see three defenders huddled up over a trips bunch WR set. That doesn't make any sense. Most of the time it's two CBs and a S up over top, which is exactly what the Raiders did on this play except they came with a CB blitz. We made the better play call by showing play action, which worked because of a previous run called in the same formation earlier, and kept the LB at bay.
Bad call defensively for the Raiders or excellent play call by the Dolphins? Obviously both since we scored. But also goes to show there was a lot more strategically going on with the offense and defense than what was ill-attempted to prove by a mere screen shot.
