I was wrong. I expected Martin back within 2 or 3 weeks.
It obviously doesn't work that way with this team. When there are strange stories and detours, it's out the door, whether it's Matt Roth or Davone Bess and now this.
I agree with Walrus. Martin needs to take it further and make a full report. Present it to the team and the league offices and don't hold back anything. I'm a firm believer that you don't benefit with someone like Richie Incognito on the roster or in the lockerroom. It gets even worse when other players and other members of the organization see what we gets away with, and think it's acceptable if not proper.
I've mentioned many times the dramatic change in the Dolphins in the mid '70s compared to earlier. Bobby Beathard got sloppy and took many chances on low character guys. It was rationalized in the beginning since they had high ability level. I'm talking about guys like Darryl Carlton and Donald Reese and Randy Crowder. Don't believe the nonsense that no information was available in those days. There were frequent whispers of lockeroom discontent, of guys who were causing trouble and not fully committed to other teammates or the product on the field. Then it blew up in high profile fashion when all three of them got in trouble, in two separate episodes. It was such a jolt to the organization than the Dolphins had to publicly apologize and pledge to clean up their act. The 1977 draft was going to prioritize high character guys. We ended up with A.J. Duhe and Bob Baumhower and a resurgence that carried over to the early and mid '80s.
Sorry, but I believe everything negative about Richie Incognito. A guy like that doesn't change. He makes a few offseason efforts and is handed a few flimsy awards and concludes it's a big joke, that he can continue to be a jerk behind the scenes. Avoid the penalties and look how I fool the world. Martin's reputation has already been damaged, for those who will take the simplistic wimp or traitor route. He needs to open the eyes of the owner and the commissioner.
I still can't believe that Incognito is the face of the franchise on those public service messages than are beamed into the stadium on the big screen during home games. I think I'm going to contact the Dolphins regarding that aspect. It's merely another example of lousy instincts by high members of this era, and more proof that you need to prioritize long term evidence, and not recent irrelevancy.
