The Marlins have been in existence for 20 years. They have been a joke for many of those years, with horrible ownership ripping the teams apart and were hard to even watch for at least half of those years. However, they did win Championships in 1997 and 2003, and may be building young talent for another run.

Meanwhile, our Dolphins have had somewhat similar problems with ownership as well as coaches, wile being mediocre.

Would you take very bad with the very good over what the Dolphins have done?

Absolutely. I was thinking about this earlier today and remember joking (and this was many years ago) about how the Miami Heat would probably win their first title before the Miami Dolphins won another. Then 2006 came along and it actually happened. It's incredibly sad.

Since the last championship for the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Hurricanes rattled off some of the greatest college football years from 1983 - 2001 (2002). In that same time period, the Miami Hurricanes baseball program won four College World Series titles. The Miami Heat have won three NBA titles, are currently playing for another and have been a part of five NBA Finals appearances in 26 years. The Florida/Miami Marlins have won two World Series titles since 1993 and are undefeated in postseason series play.

Is it really possible that our Florida Panthers, who currently own the #1 pick in the 2014 NHL draft, win the Stanley Cup before the Miami Dolphins win another Super Bowl? Some of you may laugh at that just like a lot of people laughed when it was a running joke that the Miami Heat would. In just 26 short years, the Miami Heat are the most successful sports franchise in South Florida when you consider nothing more than titles. The only thing the Dolphins have to hang their hat on these days are a bunch of bitter old men popping champagne corks when the last undefeated team loses each season.

With every passing decade, the Miami Dolphins have gotten WORSE. That needs to change immediately and I'm betting my chips on Bill Lazor having a significant impact in 2014 on how this offense executes.

Very well said. I don't follow hockey at all, but would love to see the Panthers start winning games. A buddy of mine had free box seats for the Panther games from his company and took me to several games. They were very fun to watch in person, but I can't follow it on TV. Since they have the #1 pick, are there any real potential franchise changing players like there is in the NBA right now? The top 3 NBA draft prospects can really change the landscape of the game if they live up to their potential. Hopefully the Panthers can get lucky with a big time player, it would suck to see them have the 1st overall pick in an underwhelming draft class.

I miss Don Shula.

We have already had the bad years, almost going winless under Cameron.

Absolutely I would take bouncing between good and terrible. Post-Shula and Pre-Philbin we were either toothless with no chance of advancing in the playoffs or out of the playoff hunt so early the season was a disaster.

We already have endured some bad times ... and have zilch to show for it.

Hell yeah I'd take the Marlins ridiculous up and down years. We've been vacilting between mediocrity and irrelevance.

Sent from my phone, so please forgive any typos.

No, hitting bottom does not guarantee you a championship later on. If someone told me I guarantee your team will win 2-3 SB, but those SB, your team will be among the worst teams in the NFL, I am sure many would take it, but again nothing is guaranteed, besides the Dolphins have not exactly be among the better team in the NFL for a while now (Including having 2 season bad enough to get Miami a top 2 pick). Problem with losing to build a championship team is that the team gets into a losing pattern they seem to have a hard time getting out of.

Winning is habit forming, unfortunately so is losing.

Aaron Ekblad or Sam Reinhart...can't go wrong with either of those guys. But, it's no secret that the Panthers are willing to deal the top pick for the right price. Personally, I would take Ekblad and be done with it.

since the marlins have been in existence the Dolphins haven't even reached a title game and while you made the playoffs in '94, '95, '97-'01, you have only made it once since then so you have not been very good w/o the championships. you haven't been marlins bad outside of a year or 2 but I think you'd have to take the championships.

you guys were so lucky to have a coach like shula, he always had you as a playoff caliber team. He didn't win any SBs from 1974-1995 but he always had you in the hunt which is amazing.

the Panthers are probably going to take Aaron Ekblad #1 overall and never look back

Neither of my favorite teams (Dolphins & Suns) have won a championship in my lifetime. I would take the good with the bad because I would like to experience the excitement of my team being The Champion at least once before I'm gone.

I knew the Heat would be there when Arrison hired Riley. I actually enjoyed watching Zo, Tiny Tim, and Mash in some epic battles more than most of the Heat's playoff games. It was a much different era. and well worth the price of admission.

The Canes, in their hey day were ever so special, as most hated them, and we rally loved them. Take no prisoners, and if ya don't like it, GFY.

The Marlins did surprise. The young talent they assembled was amazing. Just think about the players they let walk.

Not a hockey fan but, did have some fun with the rats in going to a few games back then.

Now, we have our Dolphins with patience wearing VERY thin for most Phans. Something has to happen, and very quickly. IF RT is not the answer, and we have to rebuild yet once again, the fan base will diminish beyond recognition. We have seen the erosion on this forum, as well as everywhere else. We all need a reason to BELIEVE.

Are either of those two players considered to have elite potential? I wouldn't think hockey is a sport that can get you into deep contention with just one elite player. Maybe I'm wrong, I really don't know anything about hockey lol, not really popular growing up in South Florida. :chuckle:

Definition of a true fan. Not many people grow up like that anymore nowadays.

Would you take very bad with the very good over what the Dolphins have done?

Sure. I would take a championship for 10 years of suck. It's not like anything else has been happening of late.

Though I don't think it's really fair to compare a MLB team to an NFL team, it's a whole different ballpark when building a team. I thought the Heat should have won a championship a lot earlier in the days of Alonzo and Hardaway. As for the Panthers they came pretty close in '96, Vanbeisbrouk disappeared early in that one, though game 4 was an epic battle for goalies.

here's the difference between the Marlins and the Dolphins in my mind as a fan of both teams.

With the Marlin you usually know when they are serous about making a title run or just penny pinching on free agents and letting great players leave hoping the leftovers just win a few games.
The Dolphins on the other hand usually give hope that they want to win and are making moves to make that happen even when it doesn't. Usually the moves don't work and the expensive free agents under perform but they seem to at least be trying to get better every season.

With this the Fins can always break my heart when their plans fall apart. The Marlins have no such hold on me.
I think i would prefer like the Dolphins use to be. Always in contention even if they don't win a super bowl as opposed to winning it all every 10 years with losing teams the other 9.

Are either of those two players considered to have elite potential?

Reinhart, Ekblad, Leon Draisaitl, Michael Dal Colle and Sam Bennett are considered to have elite tools. if they develop to be elite players is obviously unknown at this point.

and absolutely, and elite goalie alone can be enough to put you in contention.

For Miami teams, I think it all about having a plan, and having some luck involved. The Marlins traded for, drafted, and developed great young players. The Heat went the other way in clearing their roster, and adding top FA's. The Dolphins have not done either with much success in drafts or FA, as well as coaching and the FO.
