The Miami Dolphins remain committed to getting a deal done with Ryan Tannehill before the start of a new season.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport said Monday on NFL Total Access that the Dolphins are turning their attention to Tannehill after signing center Mike Pouncey to a rich extension late last week. There have been no formal discussions between Tannehill's reps and the Dolphins since the NFL Scouting Combine, but the plan remains in place to get an extension done ahead of Week 1.

The Dolphins have both time and options working in their favor. If a new deal cannot be reached, Miami can still exercise Tannehill's fifth-year option that will keep him under team control through the 2016 season. That would put Tannehill on the books for roughly $16 million in 2016.
Vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum made it clear at the NFL Annual Meeting last month that the Dolphins believe they have a franchise quarterback in Tannehill, who set a team record for completions in 2014.
"If you have one in the building you can win with you want to pay him as reasonably as possible," Tannenbaum said, per the South Florida Sun Sentinel. "The good thing is we have one."
The Dolphins are in a similar situation to the Colts, who recently picked up the fifth-year option of their franchise quarterback, Andrew Luck. Colts owner Jim Irsay said last month that Indianapolis won't address Luck's deal until after the 2015 season.
The Dolphins are motivated to get Tannehill locked up well before then.

This news will either make fans really happy or really upset. I for one think the ink should be dried already...

This makes perfect sense. You really want to lock in Tannehill before Luck or Wilson sign and set the market at a new benchmark.

We have signed Suh and Pouncey to deals that set new benchmarks.
Luck and Wilson willl do the same. We will be better off if we can get locked in with Tannehill before those deals come out.

Tannehill has motivation not to simply take the extension. He takes a lot of hits. And the guaranteed money in a 5 year deal beats simply taking the extension.

Get it done. Tannehill is poised for a BIG year with Landry back, a true receiving tight end in Cameron, a true speedster in Stills, and whomever else we draft. Couple that with a second year in Lazors system and yes, getting him locked up before his value skyrockets is smart. This isn't optimism as much as an indictment of how bad the offensive players were around him last year

These people have no clue. We get 22 mil+ off the books next year.

Glad we are taking this step now. His price will only go up. If it doesnt, then we will be cleaning house and this front office will be gone anyway. So, let's get this done before the season.

I agree with Austin Tatious; sign OV before the season as well. With Suh and Wake still performing at a high level this could be a career year for OV ... and we may not be able to afford him after the season.

We haven't had this luxury behind center in a decade and a half. Lock it up!

Get it done soon before he becomes too expensive...
