Don Shula

Damn , Shannon Sharpe has really gone downhill since he was let go from CBS.

The wife and I eat at Shula's every year for our Anniversary.

I've never met him, but I'll never forget a joke I read in Reader's Digest about him when I was a kid:

Apparently after the perfect season, he and his wife were vacationing in Maine, and went to see a movie. When they entered the theater, everyone turned around and applauded.

He and his wife waved, and then they sat down next to a guy. Don turned to the guy and said, "Man, I can't believe you all know who I am, even up here."

The guy replied, "Pal, I have no idea who you are. They said they wouldn't start the movie until two more people showed up."

The Don Shula Show of the early and mid 80's with Chuck Dowdle hosting on ABC was the best. If the Dolphins were playing on MNF that night, it was the best x 10. Those were the days.

I met Don Shula at St. Thomas fields during practice. Shook his hand and told him how much I loved the team.

I remember him running around the practice field all by himself before practice and sometimes with the team.
I remember 4 practices a day (not allowed now) and standing at the north fence so I could get as close as possible.
I remember the 12 minute run.
I remember the "gassers"
I remember the time I was at practice when I should have been at work. I was lucky my superiors did not see the TV coverage of practice that day. They did get me on film (I was wearing a state of Florida uniform) and I was certain they were going to put it on the evening news. They did not use the footage.
My best memory is when he sent Marino out onto the field for the very first time. Thats when the magic started!

Those were some very good times. If anyone gets the chance, watch Shula 347. Its a very good documentary about his life.
