You guys might think I'm talking trash, but with our mediocre offensive line and Center who just cannot get benched (like Fiedler), Donald Lee's services will be greatly needed and appreciated...Last time I checked, he was the best blocking Tight-End on this team ahead of McMike and Diamond. Yeah, he can't catch a break, but we will need him to block constantly using a 2 Tight-end sets like we always start games...
I'm sorry to say that but he is an excellent blocker and he is like a 6th offensive Linemen on this team. If you guys watch the game tapes, Donald Lee picked up most or all of the blitzes coming his way and always block his man (unlike Wife Beater)

P.S. Did I also mention also that Donald Lee always find a way to get open to beat the coverage easily..I'm not sure if he runs great route but he seems to always beat his man and get open.."Only if he could catch"

From what I have read and heard, you are right. He is a great blocker. People like me don't always pay attention to important things like that. All I know is that the guy cannot catch a football.

You said Wife Beater. AHHHHHHHHHH HAAAAAHAAAAAAA ( not that beating your wife is funny or anything.)

i am in accordance here. First off Lee just had a bad preseason, like McMike has. Lee also bailed us out of trouble in 2003 when we played the titans (anyone remember that game?)

Lee has performed admirably as a backup TE for us the last 3 years. No reason to release him, especially not because a couple of bad plays in the preseason.

no, not cause a couple of bad plays in the preseason, but because of those and all of last season when he couldn't catch the ball either. He can block. He just can't catch the damn ball.

McMike has had more drops than Lee has. And Lee won't be badgering us for a Tony G-sized contract.

I like the depth chart set up as someone else said in another thread...
1)McMike
2)Diamond
3)Lee

why can it not be this way? Rader goes to practice squad.

I don't know if Lee has had more drops than Mcmike, but I do agree with the depth chart. No problems there. I don't like Mcmike, he's kind of an A$$, but he can play. Lee can't catch the ball.

I hope you're right but I'm not at all confident Lee will stick. A 3rd TE, make that four counting Perry, is a luxury we may not be able to afford given needs elsewhere, like Saban's philosophy of rotating defensive linemen. Linehan looks like the type who wants versatile pass catching types not thumpers. It's not promising for Lee when Diamond is playing ahead of him deep into the preseason including primarily with the first team.

I've always liked Donald Lee, back to the first game I watched him block at Mississippi State. I appreciate commitment to the dirtywork and Lee consistently fires off the ball and executes the proper blocking intensity and technique. Just too darn bad be didn't come around in the '70s so it would be simple to transform him into a 260-270 pound tackle.

Diamond has nifty feet and seems like a smart possession TE. My concern, as always, is pedigree. It's not like Diamond is our own discovery from a small college where he played out of position, or whatever. He has already been in the NFL for years and virtually zero impact even with a lousy Cardinal team. The danger is the regular season opens with the increased intensity and focus, and all of a sudden Diamond is back to what he always has been, a marginal player with distinct weaknesses, like lack of speed and top drawer blocking skills.

This is one of Saban's first real dilemmas. You seldom see a coach, especially one with a troubled OL, get rid of his best pound-for-pound blocker. That is Donald Lee.

Actually I think we end up only keeping one FB and 3 TE's. Since the team will use a load of 2 TE sets it makes sense. Diamond as the H-Back when they want him and Lee as the blocker when needed.

Because we have to keep Perry at the third TE spot (longsnapper) that would put 4 TE on the squad and that wont happen unless we keep only 1 FB and Diamond as a H Back. Probably wont happen.

That's a good point. i didn't think of the one FB possibility. Diamond can definitely fill the H-Back role. My battery is almost out. You've given me more faith Donald Lee will stick.

Good night Katrina.

A lock to drop the ball or make a penalty.

aside from the occasional case of the dropsies, has anyone ever heard anything negative about lee. far as i know the dude comes to work, does what hes supposed to do, and takes on the dirty work randy wont touch without a 27ft pole. i have have a serious lack of intelligence, but theres alot of people id like to see dropped off this roster before donald lee. ie seth...

I guess you have not read the thread or did not understand the words posted. The purpose of this thread is that we need Donald Lee because he is an excellent blocker to help our O-Line which is pretty bad. I never said that he was a great receiver or did not commit penalties.

Against Pitt the coaches used Diamond a lot more in 1st team situations as an H-Back and he did not really come through very well as a run blocker or pass blocker. McMichael did not either.

Lee is a real heartbreaker, but he also presents the possibility for really kicking the defense in the gonads. He's got the same kind of athleticism as R-Mac, and like you say he's the best blocker at TE on the team. He's getting a bad rep for his hands and that means defenses are going to start treating him like Hunter Goodwin. The good thing about that is, Lee actually CAN hurt you in the passing game so the minute the D really just stops paying attention to him in the passing game guess what he could release out and catch a 30 yarder on you (provided it was not an easy catch).
