With the reasons you give for keeping Lee on the team.....good blocker....
we might as well just put an extra offensive lineman out there as the 2nd TE, I'm sure that they can't catch any worse than than Lee, and certainly couldn't fumble any more when they do catch it.
McIntosh for #2 TE!!!!!!!!
Maybe we put Lee at LT if he's such a great blocker, because catching IS a requiremnet for a TE and it's a talent that Lee has proven he does not possess!!
I believe the reason we don't just put a backup offensive lineman out there is because you want someone with the athletic ability to release out and make the defense pay for just considering that particular tight end a blocker. It is the reason you will see generally a lot of 2nd and 3rd string tight ends catching an inordinate number of touchdowns considering their playing time. You've noticed Jason Rader catching a few TDs this preseason, well one of them was that type of play where he was like the 3rd TE and the defense considered him a blocker and came in on Sage, and Sage just lofted it out flat left where nobody was there except Rader.
You know that recent trend where teams will put in a Warren Sapp or Mike Vrabel as a third tight end to have them catch a touchdown pass? That's because the defense sees them in there and just considers them vicious blockers and plays them accordingly. Then they surprise you by catching a TD. I remember Jumbo Elliott did that to us one year.
If Wade Smith were healthy actually I would consider him for the job, he could do it I think. And, I know Junior Seau got experimented with at tight end in San Diego at one point. Jason Taylor is itching to do it too. But, if Lee EVER gets over his dropsies, that guy is more dangerous than them all combined.
