Draft Picks

Lets hope Ricky doesen't go through his career with the Fins without an OL like Dan went through his without a running game or defense.

Most commonly used phrase about Marino is " he was great but never had the running game or defense he needed to win the superbowl."

Lets hope in ten years we don't hear "Ricky was a good RB but never had the offensive line or passing game to win the superbowl."

If we go for OL, it has to be a left tackle. And if there aren't any good ones available in the first round where we pick, it would be hard to say its worth spending a pick on it.

Otherwise QB would be nice. We haven't really drafted one in ages. It would be about time, if we got the right guy. We need a new DE, DT, WR...LB...

I agree, IMO we need priority wise LT, LB, DE,DT,WR. Either through the draft or FA.

I think Wannspiel will pull the trigger on a Franchise QB if available..

There are at least 6-8 first round potential QB's

Leftwich
Manning (They say he is coming out for the draft from what I hear)
Ragone
Palmer
Grossman
Simms
Dorsey
Roethslinger (sp?) (Not sure if he will come out this year)

Leftwitch deffinite first round qb

Ragone 1st round as well

Simms needed to win the game against OU to be elite, but will go middle to late 1st

Palmer will climb if he wins against ND, and needs a really good combine to end up in the first round

Gesser will be a first round if questions about his arm strength are answered in a positve way

Eli is a Manning, so it is very doubtfull he will go to the NFL after this year

Grossman will not like what he hears as far as his draft status is concerened, and will most likely stay in school. If he goes early teams will fall in love with the arm, but wil shy away from the size 6'1'' 215lbs, and his inability to make things happen with a little less talent around, but still more than most NCAA qbs have.

Dorsey is a joke as a NFL prospect. Can you say Gino Trottea? Steve Walsh? Lack of arm strength is an understatement, and he still struggles to put a spiral on a ball, and can't look off defenders. Oh yeah, and he forces things when they aren't there.

Who is Rothslinger? and what team does he play for?

Leftwitch and Ragone are the elite QBs, the other first round guys are more like Patrick Ramsey than they are like David Carr or Harrington. If there wasn't a shortage of gun slingers 2-3 of those guys would be in the 3-4th round.

I say no o-line postion is safe if you are currently a Miami Dolphin unless you are McKinney because they have high hopes for him. Tackle is more likely to be first round selection unless there is a great guard out there. After that WR is a major concern, and then LB. After those postions you look for depth or future at DE, DT, and QB depending the best player available.

I agree only I would put it LT, OG (we really need to put emphasis on developing a line), DE (one that can seriously benefit from J.T), WR , LB, DT.

Whats wrong with the combo of O-gun and JT?

Who is Rothslinger? and what team does he play for?

He is a stud QB that plays for Miami, Ohio. He is only a sophmore though so I don't think that he will come out quite yet.

I don't see us going QB in Round 1. We'd be paying high salaries to two QBs. And that simply won't happen in Miami. It will be the best player available at a need position.

Miami won't take a QB in round 1. They will likely take an OLB like Michael Boulware, Lemarcus McDonald of TCU or Karlos Dansby of Auburn, or the best available left tackle, be it Kwame Harris of Stanford, if he's still around, which is very unlikely, Brett Williams of FSU or Jordan Gross of Utah, although the last two may project as RT's at the next level - the Senior Bowl practices will determine that. They may wait and take Arkansas State's Garry Johnson if he falls into the 3rd round. They could slip into round 2, pick up an extra pick and take a guard like BC's big Chris Snee or Vince Manuwai of Hawaii or Adrien Clarke of Ohio State. I see them looking at someone like Kliff Kingsbury in the 3rd round to address the QB situation. Miami might do DE in 1 as well and with William Joseph slipping, he could play base end in our scheme; Ohio State's Will Smith or Colorado's Tyler Brayton, etc. would also be options. We might look at DT, with Dewayne Robertson of Kentucky if he declares, although he will likely be gone, or Ty Warren. But I think that the end of the road is approaching for Derrick Rodgers and Dave and Rick will try and get more of a playmaker outside, which means the three guys I mentioned - who are all juniors, but who have all indicated that they will come out. Or of course, there is WR, and there are some talented guys likely to be in the pot this April and if all the juniors that are leaning towards declaring declare, that will push some real talent down the board.

As for the QB's mentioned.....no way does Ken Dorsey even make day one and neither does Jason Gesser, who is a career back-up, late rounder at the next level. He is too small and his arm is not strong enough - great college QB...poor NFL one.

The Miami of Ohio QB is Ben Roethlisberger, who has hinted at declaring - so much so that Mike Brown and the Bengals chief scout have twice been at Redhawks games this year scouting him, but the most likely scenario is that he stays where he is. But even if he did declare this year, he would be a very high pick and if he comes out next year, as a redshirt junior, he'll be top 5.

Carson Palmer is firmly entrenched in the first round as of now. Expect him to light it up at the Senior Bowl and to push high into the top 10. Look out for Cal's Kyle Boller to move up into the top echelon. Grossman's form this year has him as a top 35 player, but he would do well to go back for another year. He has already stated that he will return.

As for Eli Manning, there is lots of talk in Oxford that he will declare. In fact, his mother and father at a dinner engagement in Oxford last week, told people that they no longer knew what Eli was going to do and that he would likely talk to Peyton, but that he was very single minded. I would not be surprised at all to see him come out.

OL was my post. You don't need a franchise QB to win the SB. Miami had one and only made it once very early in his career. My opinion of the Fish needs after this season (FA and/or draft):

1) OL: Your OL is in the bottom half of the league and getting worse. This is a fact. Fiedler seemingly makes them better, but ya must agree that major upgrades are needed to take full advantage of Ricky Williams. Start with LOT. Mark Dixon is UFA and has said that he will retire due to injury problems. Brent Smith is always injured and UFA. That leaves Marcus Spriggs who hasn't played well. Wade is underachieving. Nails is playing just OK IMO. Perry and Ruddy are just average. strong commitment needed to upgrade here with LOT #1 priority

2) Veteran QB to back up Fiedler. Two words prove this point: Ray Lucas

3) OLB: Neither Rodgers nor Greenwood are starting material. Greenwood is still young and could develop. Need a top talent at OLB.

4) S: Need to find replacement for Marion eventually. SS is liability as well.

5) WR: Need a true #2 opposite Chambers. FA may be best route and then add another WR in the draft

6) DL: Never can have enough DL.

Doesn't look like Ricky will get to 1,500 yds, thus Clump's early draft projection:

1) OT Steve Sciullo (Marshall): could trade down

2) to New Orleans

3) FS Willie Pile( Va Tech)

4) to Carolina

4(Comp) OLB Victor Hobson (Michigan)

5) C/G Bruce Nelson (Iowa)

5(Comp) WR Paul Arnold (Washington)

6) DL Curtis Daniely (Mid. Tenn St)

7) FB Tom Lopienski (Notre Dame)

7(I think from trade) OL Rex Richards (Texas Tech)

I don't like Sciullio. He is small and is basically like another Dixon. We need a big, strong guy who can push the pile. I like Soloman Page when plays for the Cowboys and is better suited to play LT. He would be a hugge upgrade for us and would come relatively cheap. Anthony Clement is coming off injury and could be had kinda cheap as well. Walter Jones is a guy who will leave Sea. He signed the one year tender with the stipulation he wouldn't be franchised again this year.

OLB can be found in 2nd and I'm still not convinced we won't have one.

We will get 3 comp picks for what we lost in the offseason. Lamar Smith is going to get 1100 yards and that is worth a 3rd or 4th comp pick right?

Compensation picks are awarded by a formula that takes not only UFAs lost but offsets them with UFAs signed. Contract player signs is also part of the formula. There are only 32 comp picks awarded, so some teams get only one pick that would have been actually 2 picks (i.e. like a 5th instead of 2 6th's). At this point, DT Chester offsets some of what Lamar Smith is doing. I believe I'm generous giving ya 4th and 5th rd comp picks.

OT Clements signed long term w/ Cards and is strictly a ROT. Walter Jones, I believe, also signed a long term deal to stay in Seattle.

re

No way we go QB in the first. With only 3 picks we need players who can a least contribute in year 1. With Jay's play and contract he's starting next season, unless injured.

I agree with the Masses. OL is the way to go. IMO you can't completely blame this collapse on Lucas. The OL has not been the same since the Denver game.

LT would be the priority with OG a close second. Next would be LB, WR, & CB.

If we can get a solid LT in the 1st then a Mauler who plays OG next it would help to get this line going in the right direction. Keep in mind that this will not happen overnight. Look as ARZ. They have I believe 4 1st round lineman on that line and they are just now starting to jell. Coaching may be a factor.

Another intriguing option is to sign a OT like Jensen from Was. I know he's a RT but IMO I think Wade could play ROG. He has trouble with Speed rushers which wouldn't be a problem at OG. That would give you a lineup of

LT Rookie
LG Nails
C McKinney
RG Wade
RT Jensen

Experience would be a problem but size and strength should help.

I also woudn't mind seeing Troy Andrew get a look at LG, he filled in for Dixon last year and played fairly well.

As for my other priorties. I agree with the comments about Greenwood and Rodgers. Greenwood is just not making plays and Rodgers makes them in clusters. The rest of the time he's some other type of Cluster.....;)

CB is a priority because, I'm concerned about Madison's play of late and I'm not completely sold on Fletcher. Omar lowe is on the roster but he can't even earn his way into the Dime scheme. I mean Scott McGharrahan is playing over him! I like Mc, but only because he's special team maniac.

WR is a lower priority because we have McKnight to fall back on if needed.

One big problem here is a Rookie at LT? you are asking for trouble there.. lots of blind side hits on the qb and fumble or injury...
