Drafting a QB this year vs. next year

I don't remember Peyton Manning as a "can't miss" prospect coming out of Tennessee, where he lost to Florida every year, and had a bit of a tag as a questionable big game QB.

Revisionist history loves to paint pictures that really weren't there at the time.
Its amazing how time wipes away memory. Its for that very reason why Ryan Leaf was ranked ahead of Manning by quite a few people

I've watched Tebow play alot, and I really think he has the potential to make it in the NFL. He needs alot of polishing, so I'm definately not about to anoint him the next Manning or anything, but he's got a cannon arm and is more accurate than people give him credit for.

He needs to work on hanging in the pocket longer, and he has to learn to take a little off his shorter throws over the middle...I swear he tries to embed the ball in the receiver's chest sometimes on those short routes. The Meyer offense will hurt him, too...I see him taking longer to develop than someone who played in a pro-style offense in college. He especially has to learn how to play from under center, the offense here is almost exclusively shotgun (I never saw Tebow take a snap under center, though Leak did occasionally his senior season). I'm pretty convinced he wont come out early, and with a couple more years of seasoning he could end up being a solid NFL quarterback (I'll never count out a guy with the kind of physical talent and work ethic that he has).

Yeah, I'm just saying that I'd like too See Tebow play his next 2 years of college ball before I make any final judgements on his NFL prospects.

I do understand he intends to do all 4 years.

this is a stupid link, no offense, 2 years ago before the college season you ask anyone who the best qb will be they would say brady quinn- who was it jamarcus, last year who will be the top qb and you would get a brohm 10 out of 10 times and who is it matt ryan, so although it is fun to look into the future it is kind of useless

Alex Smith played in the same offense under Meyer! I don't think it hurt his draft status! Smith though does have alot left to prove in the NFL!

no, but it should have. and i think NFL teams will realise not to make that mistake again.

I believe it's supposed to be a really bad QB class next year. There is this guy, Curtis Painter out of Purdue who could be the only 1st round pick in '09. I have never seen him play so may be someone who watches a lot of college games or a Purdue fan here can give more insight?

Here are his stats -

Curtis Painter Jnr Purdue age 22

CMP ATT YDS CMP% YPA LNG TD INT SACK RAT
356 569 3846 62.6 6.76 80 29 11 25 132.29

Right now, Mathew Stafford is only QB, (IMO) worth sniffing the 1st round.

Everybody is a 3rd project.

When he only played in the last three years...33 games...and his best season out of those three years, was last season with a 61.5 comp rating...it's hard to say he's been better than average.

That would only make sense if he hadn't been in the league 8 years. Did you just forget about the first 5 probowl years? How many probowls do you think is average for a QB? How many conference championships is avg.? How many SBs is avg.?

if louisville QB still there in second round get him if \not get tebow next year

I forgot about Painter. I have only seen a couple of his games, but I don't think he'll be a first day pick. I belive he played generally in a spread offense (correct if I'm wrong because I'm really not sure) and against Ohio State in a huge, he did not fare well when facing a pass rush.

The only one at this stage is junior Stafford and its doubtful he comes out. If we dont fix our QB position (either drafting one or Beck developing into one) we may have to wait until 2010 before we can address it again.

This is the case closer on this argument. Ive been screaming the same thing for weeks.

1) Tebow seems like he is staying for his senior year.

2) Many think Tebow wont even be a good NFL QB(myself included)

3) Matthew Stafford seems to be staying for his senior year.

4) And most importantly.............What makes anyone think we will be selecting in the top few picks of next years draft????????? Even if we are top 10, that dosent guarentee us a shot at the top QB or even the top 2 QBs for that matter. Everyone who wants to pass on Ryan just assumes that if Beck isnt a franchise QB, we will somehow have our pick of the litter next year. We probably wont. But, WE DO have our pick of the litter THIS YEAR.

This problem has to be addressed NOW. We have the first pick....take the guy we have needed for years now. The franchise QB.

Otherwise, if we stick with what we have and Beck dosent get it done, we find ourselves waiting till 2010 to address the problem, we probably wont have a top pick then(hopefully we will win some games), and then it would still take a year or two to develope that QB(even if he is the top QB available in the draft). HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Why even bother building a team if we dont have the QB who can take us to the title? If we have to wait till 2012 to have the right guy in there and have him developed, then we have to wonder if Bill will still even be with us. He signed a 4 year deal. I dont think he wants to wait that long.

I think if we dont draft a QB this year, and Beck dosent pan out, we are probably looking at trading for a guy(Derek Anderson) next season moreso than drafting a guy in 09 or 2010. I dont want to be in that position. DRAFT RYAN!

As a die hard Seminoles fan i think Tebow is a complete tool bag. But having said that he is a good college QB in that system, which does not in anyway mean he will be a good Pro QB. I wouldnt even be convinced that he will come out early unless there is talk he will be a top 10 pick.

But dont count out the QB's in next years class already. I definitely dont think it will be as great as this years class, but there is always some QB no one has heard of that has a breakout year and projects to the NFL well.

Wont Pat White and the guy form Missouri be coming out next season too?
(*Not in anyway saying Pat White would be anything higher than a backup in the NFL)

:sidelol: Dude Pat White will never even play QB in the NFL, much less be a backup. On top of that he probably will never play in the NFL period. If he does it would have to be to make it as a WR or something like Rasheed Marshall tried. He was a return man who tried to catch on with the 9ers and the bungles as a 4th or 5th wide and punt returner. He was our QB at WVU before White btw. Not that White isnt better than he is(and faster), but they were the same style of guys. Even no one around here(that actually understands football) will tell you White will play QB in the league.

And if that isnt good enough for ya, the main reason he wont play QB and probably not even in the NFL at any position is that he is a beast on the diamond and will play Centerfield somewhere. Most likely minor leagues but, my understanding is he has a shot to make the majors one day. He has already been drafted if Im not mistaken. Word is he can really track it down out there in center, but needs to work on his hitting.

Tim Tembow is only a sophtmore so no one can tell if he will be a good NFL quaterback
