Dumping All Dolphins FA's?

Southbeach - I see you're point, but there are two FA's I feel strongly that we must re-sign.

(1) Brent Grimes - proved he is still one the best at his position. He's a physical freak with a lot left in his tank. You don't let a guy like that walk.

(2) If I had to chose between Starks/Solai, I would chose Paul Solai because he's legtimate mountain that can occupy two blockers. Our run defense was pretty bad last year, and it got worse when he wasn't on the field. We need to go back to days when we had two stud DT's (remember the days of Tim Bowens and Darrly Gardner) occupying blockers so Zach Thomas could roam freely. If we do that for Ellerbe, the run defense will improve significantly. Young DTs in free agency are very expensive; I rather draft the DT (Daniel McCullers) from U. of Tennesse in the 3rd or 4th round. We can find good DTs in the mid rounds, we drafted Solai in the 4th round.

Other notes:

I would offer Dustin Keller another contract, a contract that will protect the team. During the summer, he looked happy to be in Miami, he'll want to prove himself again, and he will come cheap.

Maybe I'm a little harsh on this guy, but I'm not a fan of Nolan Carrolllike some on this board. I give him credit for being a hard worker, and he's made some improvement. I still think he's a liability in coverage though. IMO...he should never be a starter (even if there is an injury to the original starters), he's more of a backup's backup. I hope Jamar Taylor is ready to step up and stay healthy, the same for Dmitri Patterson (I hope he agrees to re-structure his contract this year). The Dolphins should take a "wait and see" approach before re-signing Carroll. Let Patterson, Taylor, and Will Davis compete in camp. See if they can stay healthy before spending money on Carroll. Carroll won't get many looks in free agency, so just wait and see what the others can do first.

Chris Clemons had a good year, he's not flashy, but he's very solid and doesn't give up big pass plays. I like T.J. Wardbetter though. I would go after Ward before offering Clemons a contract.

John Jerry - offer him a cap friendly contract, but I would be looking for another guard to give him some serious competition.

I agree with everything except not offering Clemons an offer first. He's crazy cheap for the production he brings... Very underrated on this board. Just draft his replacement, no need to spend more to get the same product. And honestly I think Chris beats TJ in camp if they were on the team...

GM doesn't decide what scheme a team runs.

Also letting Grimes walk would be a huge mistake.

He does when he is the one hiring a coach but, get your point in this situation. IYO, how much is Grimes worth? Is it the $11M on the franchise tag?

The other thing that comes into play is the new GM, and how much we go 3-4, if at all, and IF the new GM will have any say in what we do.

It makes a difference.

GM won't change anything like scheme. Probably not even the way we handle contract negotiations either(Aponte).. He's just going to take over scouting and the way we evaluate players mostly. It'd still have to be a collective agreement upon what players they take in the draft between the coaches and gms/scouts.

Starks • Effort and attitude is a ? at times
Grimes • Straight baller
Soliai • Midplay when being held will literally stop in his tracks looking for a flag
Incognito • He bullies little girls
Clemons • Sound in coverage but makes zero "wow" plays... he's just kinda ok while not being too impactful
Owens • Expendable
Stanford • Replaceable
Carroll • Wildly inconsistent, has improved somewhat yet still a marginal player
Yeatman • 3rd stringer coming off a ACL tear
Spitler • Only good for depth at LB and can easily be replaced
Keller • Health status will be uncertain and with the emergence of Clay his services might not be needed
Watkins • I like that he was a 1st round pick and our new OC is familiar with him but other than that, meh
Clabo • Washed up
Moore • Excellent on special teams but his WR skills leave a lot to be desired
Jerry • Takes until week 6 to get into shape and will forever have weight issues
McKinnie • Getting up there in age but other than Pouncey was our best lineman, yet and still we need a complete overhaul

Don't ya think that the new GM, Philbin, and Coyle will get together on what to do with Jordan? Hell, I would, and this "could" make a difference in scheme. IF they Frack Up Jordan, I am gonne be LIVID. IMO, he is to the D what RT is to the O.

That might be a good call on Clemons vs. Ward. The difference may not be much of a difference, and Clemons knows the defense too. It makes sense.

I agree, but I doubt they change the whole scheme. Maybe tweak it a bit IF that's what makes us better as a whole. My major concern is what we're going to do with our LBers. Those guys are sitting ducks... We need to hide some blitzes or get them in positions we can utilize their strengths.

If we had no other choice, then the answer is an emphatic "YES". But of course we should be workng out a multi-year contract so we don't have to take that kind of hit. Grimes gave up no TDs last year, and lead our team in INTs. He shut down the other teams best WR which makes scheming so much easier for our coaches. I hope we never have to go back to the days of Sean Smith and Nolan Carroll as our starting DBs. I prefer the days of Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain :brewskis:

My LB rotation is Ellerbe and Misi inside, with Wake and Jordan outside. OV and Wheeler complete the rotation. I'm going 3-4 here, as it makes a whole lotta sense but, not entirely. Soliai, Starks, and Odrick can play both, and I have many interchangeable parts.

I was talking with a friend of mine who is a Panthers fan and he was pretty down because they had so many holes to fill in their secondary. My response was that as long as you had at least one dominant cover corner it could have a "trickle down" effect on the rest of the unit. Never would have said that without seeing the difference Grimes made.

Grimes is a MUST re-sign. I shudder to think how bad or secondary would be without him. Carroll has improved but I would hate to go into next season with him as our #1 DB. This assumes Patterson was no longer with the team or tore an ACL while shaving and was gone for another season.

Starks is important too but IMO Grimes is the only MUST re-sign.

Patterson tied him in picks in 3 games, and I wold keep him (high risk) in place of $11M for Grimes who is over 30 IF that's what it comes down to. Taylor may surprise many at CB this year.

Grimes and Starks have 3 years left of Pro Bowl Caliber play. Soliai is worth a 2 year deal. the rest can leave
