Ellerbe #59

I agree I'm not high on Ellerbe myself. I want him to work out but I just don't see it happening maybe we draft a middle linebacker who can eventually take the reigns.

Ellerbe isn't a huge miss in FA. He's solid, but hasn't been spectacular. It's Wheeler that is a step backwards from what we had at LB last year. We should have only cut Burnett lose, and kept Dansby in the middle signing Ellerbe to play outside. Would have actually been an ungrade to the LB unit instead of a step backwards. Of course hindsight is 20/20, and when he was here most people hated Dansby.

Ellerbe is an inside backer he dent play OLB..

ME: Ellerbee and Wheeler are so Bad....

You Guys: How bad are they???

ME: They are soooo baaaad that Koa Misi is now our best linebacker :rimshot:

I think both could be replaceable. Wheeler actually has 9 more solo tackles then Ellerbe does and more total tackles. Im sorry but the MLB should be leading the team in tackles.. Not a WOLB. IDK where i can find how many missed tackles they have, but im willing to bet they missed close to the same amount.

Ellerbe does have 2 int though. Im willing to give him another year. But i have not been impressed at all with him. Ellerbe isnt even in the top 40 in tackles made. Wheeler is #34

zach thomas itis?

Wheeler has been healthy all season. If I remember correctly Ellerbe was out a game and a few quarters as well. I don't remember which game he got hurt but I would say hes played quite a few plays less than Wheeler. Same with Wake. Wake has "started" 12 games but there was games where he just played the first possession and left.

If you pay attention to Ellerbe, he is the quarterback of our defense, he's always making adjustments and getting the defense in tune to what is about to happen on offense. I see it every other play, he does a lot more than it seems that you see.

He may do more than I see but a lot less than I expected. I agree that he's better in coverage than Dansby, and better on the blitz, but he's worse against the run, so overall, it's not an upgrade. I really would like someone with his size/speed to be better at filling holes, anticipating gaps, shedding blocks and tackling than he is. He's just not good at any of those things, and stopping the run is fundamental to the MLB position.

Don't get me started on Wheeler though.

I didn't pay much attention to Ellerbe until about a month ago. I knew he wasn't great. I assumed he was solid.

Once I started looking at him play after play, it's amazing how often his feet get stuck in cement. Wheeler makes the obvious mistakes because he's active but doesn't like to take on blockers. He'll take the wrong side on occasion and it really looks bad when he essentially creates the hole for the offense.

With Ellerbe you don't notice the mistakes because so often he's just standing there, apparently waiting for something -- anything -- to process before he makes a commitment.

Many of the inside runs that should have been confronted within 2-3 yards in past years are allowed to gain 5-6 because Ellerbe simply doesn't react.

He's athletic but no instincts.

Really? You can't be serious. Letting a team run all over you is demoralizing, kills clock, kills momentum, creates long drives, and tires your defense.

Teams run "all over" us? We may not have the best run defense, but we hardly get steamrolled. However, last season our run defense was stellar and our pass defense was complete crap. This year we are MUCH better against the pass and only marginally worse against the ground. In a pass-first league, I'll take that trade off every day.

Ellerbe and Wheeler are a part of our improved pass defense (although I thought Dansby and Burnett were both solid in pass defense last season).

edit: To address the posts above mine, I think Ellerbe would do well to lose about 5-10lbs and gain a little more speed.

Sorry but that is the job of every MLB in the league. He just hasnt done a great job. Hes not even in the top 40 in tackles and is constantly missing tackles and late on his reads (on the run)

I think MLB is a position that needs to be upgraded and maybe Ellerbe can move outside.

Ellerbe is an inside the box LB.. When it comes to getting into space he fails. He's not as quick as I'd like, I think we all watch guys like Kuechly, Wagner, Willis, Bowman, etc and hope we can get the same out of Ellerbe which he isn't any of those guys. He isn't great but he isn't bad, we could def look into upgrading his spot and wheelers spot in the offseason.

Im not impressed with the duo of Ellerbe and Wheeler, and further more I am pissed that we are gonna have to let Starks or Solai walk because we cant pay them. While Ellerbe and Wheeler will be making money could have been spent on the DT's. Hopefully they get better because subtract Starks or Solai for a whole season and the run Defense could get worse.
