Evan Mathis Trade Re-visited

From what I've read, Mathis is looking for around $6M a year, which is more than Asamoah, Schwartz, and Saffold got. Is he worth more? No Question. We overpaid for Wallace, Alber, and Finnegent as if we were close to conteding. Why not pay an All Pro OG a half mil more than Finnegen. He was actually Great last year. JMO but, we will not do it.

Yep, we pay 10 mil per year for Albert and nobody blinks. Evans is a much better player for his position and no one wants to pay 6 mil for the biggest need on the team. I agree a 3rd rd pick would be hard to give, but instead of a 3rd, throw in a WR, Daniel Thomas and a later pick. Signing Evans would give me real hope that this FO is really trying to improve this OL.

I do not understand the over-valuation of the draft. IF ya do good, you hit on half, and we have done much worse. To me, a 3rd rounder is somewhat meaningless in looking at an All Pro to take it's place. I think many, because of time, effort, and misguided belifs on the draft, think we are gonna striike gold. It seldom happens.

Seems no matter what we do on the line your not happy. We signed Albert and smith in FA not happy we draft a tackle and guard early. Your still not happy. What will it take

if he is cut then i am for signing him but as it stand i would rather not give any assets up for a guy who has limited years left to play

Then you do not have a good understanding of how you build a team. There is something called a salary cap, and because of that you need "cheap" players playing on rookie contracts to balance out the guys that you are paying top money to. Not every player on your roster can be paid like an all-pro. That is why draft picks are valuable.

We have too many question marks at guard. Will Dallas Thomas emerge, can Turner start, is Shelly Smith a solid starter at this point. I don't think I'm comfortable just yet with this o-line fix. I'd like one proven veteran signed as insurance against counting on players that have never been starters in the NFL. That's not even taking into consideration that we've penciled in James at RT and he's a rookie and might struggle. If we can make it happen with Mathis that cuts down our odds of running into real problems again on the o-line. We might be able to stand pat and be OK but I don't like how iffy it feels. I think we have one more signifigant move to make to solidify things. Cap stuff can be managed but leaving yourself in such a risky situation on the o-line just isn't smart. I wouldn't bet big money on Turner, Smith or Thomas being very strong players this year. I HOPE they are but you've heard the saying live in hope and die of despair.

EXACTLY !!! As it stands right now we have two starters on the OL. We have some hopes but we only have two players that have been solid starters in this league, with several other players that we have hopes in. But the bottom line is last year the biggest problem on the team was OL and now here we are a year later and still OL is our biggest question mark. I feel good about our tackles. Fox is a solid starter if he can stay healthy and if James beats him out for the position, like we all hope, then that is even better. Guard however is a mess. The only thing I know for sure is if Shelly or Turner are the best we can do, then our OL will not be much better than it was last year.

We need a OG, and Evans is the best one out there. I think we could swing a deal that both sides could live with.

What's the point of bringing this up if there's no chatter on it happening?

Really, we should never have cut him to begin with.

Hilarious all the people saying throw in Daniel Thomas!

True, My expectations were higher in fixing the OL than what I now see. It will take believing the OL will allow the team to protect Tannehill and run the ball. For that to happen I think we still need a good starting OG. JMO

Why are we re-visiting this?

There is no new reports on this. Eagles still want to trade him, don't know who is interested or if his price may go up, and don't know if Philbin has interest. However, what has changed is the draft being over, and Phans, who believe we still need help, asking what options are available. This is one of those options, like Colledge and the guy cut from Jax being discussed.

If you are happy going into the season with the OL we now have, there would be no reason for you to re-visit this. I'm thinking differently.

Another excellent thread idea SB...please keep them coming....
