Graham will make the defensive calls for Brian Flores’ Dolphins this fall. The two men first met more than a decade ago as low-level staffers on the Patriots.
What he learned in New England? Multiplicity and unpredictability are key.
That’s why the Dolphins will use a 4-3 and a 3-4 defensive front this year.
“We’re going to do whatever coach Flores wants us to do that week, and what we’re going to try to do is try to teach the guys the concepts of the defense, what the coverage is, what the rush is whether we’re rushing three, four, five, six, doesn’t matter,” Graham said. “How we deploy those guys in different spots and the outside looking in, you guys see it. It’s going to look multiple. It is going to be multiple. Are we talking about 3-4, 4-3? It’s just going to be multiple.

I hope the coaches realize early that some defensive players are clueless in what the coverage is and offensive players don't know the playbook to run hurry up.

How many years has the playbook been simplified? This last year with the exotics is the first time that it looked like players knew what to do.

Nice meme, but not accurate. Speaking as someone who has trained many ppl, all humans have flaws, and limitations.

Having said that, it is also true that even the best plans are only effective if the coaches can teach players to execute.

One of my favorite parts > "rushing three, four, five, six"

It’s mostly accurate. All teams draft from the same pool of players. The better coaches (Shula, Landry Belichick etc) get the most out of their players and its the reason they win (won) on a consistent basis. Shula had 2 losing seasons in 25 yrs and usually drafted near the end of the 1st rd. That’s no coincidence.
Meme is accurate.

I'm not trying to be the least bit argumentative at all, but might it be that those coaches just chose more wisely, with emphasis on mental aspects as well as physical traits? It would seem to be a narrow path to walk. Maybe it takes a great coach like Shula, or BB to get the balance right?

I wonder how many coaches today even have a conversation with a pick pre draft, as opposed to years past.

I agree with jlfin and you, but I'll add one more, . . . OK, 2 more.
Having played on winning and losing teams, it's easier to 'buy in' and try harder for a winning coach.
And to emphasize jlfin's point. Never underestimate scheme. BB can take average players and make a playoff team. Philbin could take average players and make, well, nothing. We've all seen solid players on a top team go to a poor team and play poorly.

To be fair, the last DC was an ivy leaguer too and how did that play out?
