This is what fast twitch refers to. I have been seeing the phrase used all over this site in absurd applications.

WTH does muscle fiber type have to do with play recognition?? or game speed?? or any of the other bogus nonsensical applications being used.

Cam Wake is a prototypical example of a guy with fast twitch dominant muscle fibers. HOF RB James Brown would be a great example of slow twitch dominant. The guy seemed to grow stronger as the game went on.

Neither is necessarily better than the other. You will probably see more slow twitch dominant guys as power RB's who can pound the rock all game long, and your fast twitch guys will be most of the speed rushers in the league.

Dolphins need both types.

I would gues a guy like Randy Starks who seems to be strong all game long is more slow twitch dominant. Roberto Wallace being 6'4" 225lbs. and having a 1.47 10 yd dash would be classic quick twitch.

People with high fast twitch fibres are more explosive, better suited to powerful movements. Generally they are considered anaerobic - and someone like Cam Wake is going to have high fast twitch fibres because he needs to produce rapid movements which generate high levels of force very quickly. Characterised by quick contractions which fatigue very quickly (e.g. olympic sprinter). Fast twitch fibres can be split into type IIa and IIb (meaning there are actually three types of muscle fibres).

People with slow twitch fibres produce less explosive contractions, although these contractions are low force and last longer (i.e. don't tire so quickly) examples of athletes with high slow twitch fibres would be an olympic marathon runner.

yup. ive heard alot of so called experts compares vernon to cam wake bc he is a fast twitch guy. and as a coach thats exactly what i want as my ends, getting after the qb. ive watched some of his film and see glimpses of what he could be with some good coaching.
