Finnegan signs with Miami

I like this signing -- Tom Brady's achilles heal is he can be intimidated by bad-ass defenses (or situations such as playing at Sunlife in December) so we need as many bad-ass vocal types on defense as we can get. I wouldn't get too worked up over the contract, for all intents and purposes it'll likely be a one year prove it deal with the second year giving us the power, think about how much better the Grimes deal would have looked had we signed him to 2 years at $11M instead of 1 at $5.5M, it worked out for us but we very easily could have lost our best player.

NFL.com's Albert Breer reports the "word is" that Cortland Finnegan's two-year deal with the Dolphins is worth $11 million.
Oh my. As former Rotoworlder Gregg Rosenthal put it on Twitter, "Finnegan should be getting calls from other players that want him to be their agent." Finnegan negotiated his own contract. He got new Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey to agree to an Ireland-esque deal for a declining veteran who was literally one of the worst corners in the league last season. Finnegan has an excellent track record, but that doesn't really matter when you're on the wrong side of 30 and coming off a calamitous year. Finnegan also struggled in 2012. The Dolphins are banking on Finnegan turning back time.

He was hurt last year but in 2012 he had 3 pick's his first three games.
Maybe he'll be like Grimes and is out to prove himself still a high caliber player.

Bench clearing brawl with the Jets is on the cards with this guy. He gets under people's skin as a DB even more than Steve Smith does as a WR. He used to be a very good CB as well. Hopefully his hamstring is healed up and he can get back to something near that level. If so, the price is right. But if he's not fully healthy, I sure hope this contract lets us cut him without any cap hit.

Out of curiosity, where does this guy rate on the "character" part that Hickey claimed? I know on the field he was thought of about the way Richie Incognito was. He usually drew unsportsmanlike conduct penalties from the other team every third game or so because he got under everyone's skin. But, considering Hickey's history of constantly going for guys like Lagaroutte Blount, Carl Nicks, and other high talent guys who fell because they had character issues ... I kinda wondered where everyone sees Finnegan on that spectrum, since he usually is a jerk only to the opposing team?

Him and the new safety both bring attitude. I'll all for it if they can limit the penalties.

Maybe Philbin and Hickey realized this defense was just to passive and needed some swag and passion. Finnegan is the kind of player you love if he is on your team, and hate if he is the opposition.

Very similar to what the Bengals have done recycling DB's. If nothing else, I like the signing because of his toughness. If he can pull a Brent Grimes, we'll have a nice group of DB's - pending Delma or a rookie.

Like others before me said, I see this signing as a guy who is very vocal and passionate. He could use his words and get in someones head and try and take them out of the game. I mean Andre Johnson is one of the nicest players in the league who is veyr soft spoken from what I have seen and read yet he fought with Finnegan on the field. That is next level head games. He is the player you hate if he is a jet, bill patriot etc. But now he is a dolphin you will like him.

Finnegan was once one of the league’s premier corners. If he’s nearly that good at 30, the Dolphins will be ecstatic. NFL Network reported the deal was for two years and roughly $11 million.

I agree. Like with Grimes who was a top corner, who after getting a prove it deal played out of his mind. Now if Finnegan goes out there and returns to his elite form do the fans bashing this move still hate it?
