One other thing dawned on me. Zach Wilson is obviously not the best backup if you are trying to win games with your backup this year. I also believe the Dolphins have concluded this team is going nowhere, with or without Tua. Ergo, they don't need the backup QB to win games if Tua gets hurt, because they are not good enough with Tua. Therefore, no downside to taking a flier on a guy with a lot of theoretical upside. I give it about a 1% chance of working with Zach Wilson, but if you view it through this lens, it makes more sense. Not only do the Dolphins view Wilson as having a chance to replace Tua, they also actually think they have no chance this year, and they could care less about winning games if Tua gets hurt. There are alot of backups with more experience, that are also better system fits, that would have been better positioned to help us this year if Tua gets hurt. And money isnt the issue either. Those guys are cheaper than Wilson. Andy Dalton just got only 2 years and $8mm from Carolina, for example.@phinsforlife nailed the outrage from the Tua camp.
Signing a QB with potential, like Wilson, vs signing an old vet like Minshew or Flacco or Mariota, signals the FO are looking for the next QB already or at least hoping this backup can take the reigns long term if he breaks out.
Its a red-flag that the organization doesn't fully believe in Tua long-term. And a breath of fresh air for those of us who already dont believe in Tua long-term.
So what, if he stinks, were not a playoff team anyway. There is no reason to hate this move if we're being honest. It'll result in one of two outcomes.
1) he sucks and helps get everyone fired and we get a better draft pick.
2) he breaks out and we can move forward with him as the starter and cut/trade Tua.
Anyway you look at it, it's a risk worth taking.
