Fins to swap 1sts with Philly and also trade a 4th rounder for Kiko/Maxwell

The fact that we got the same player we would have gotten if we didn't make the trade makes it a good trade!

It may be worthwhile re-reading the responses to the trade with Philadelphia again.

I dunno. There's about 6 posts about the players involved in the trade in this thread, and 13,465 posts speculating on what the exact compensation was.

It is safe to say at this point that getting Tunsil, Maxwell, and Alonso for trading down was a brilliant move that a lot of people were wrong about.

That trade was the difference maker for the defense. Without Alonso and Maxwell, how well would our LBs and CBs be doing?

Think about the roster moves on defense in one offseason:

- trade back, pick up to legit starters for nothing in Maxwell and Alonso, both who seem to be playing at a high level in our system
- letting OV walk and bring in Mario Williams on a team friendly deal. If Mario stays on the field, he'll have a better year than OV ever would have for a fraction of what we'd had to pay OV.
- sign Isa Abdul Quddus for a reasonable price giving us best safety tandem we've had in quite some time. Helps corners a lot.
- draft one of the most game ready corners in this years draft. safe to say everyone is impressed on how Xavien Howard missed so much time, yet seemed like such a pro on Sunday. He might not be Marcus Peters, but he seems like a really solid draft pick. If hes not a liability, im happy.

to be determined:

- Chris Culliver signing. Might give us a surprisingly solid dback core immediately following an entire rebuild. Who parts with their Pro Bowl corner, their CB2, and one of their CB3s in the same offseason, yet seemingly improves at the position? Unheard of!

- Dion Jordan. Their patience and handling of Dion Jordan may end up fostering a comeback, which could really help this defense. If Dion is truly grateful and inspired by this opportunity he was given, perhaps he becomes part of the future of the Dolphin defense. If that is the case, the Front Office's handling of him this offseason deserves a lot of credit.

There's no way Tannenbaum knew Tunsil was going to slide that far, so I'm not willing to give he credit for getting lucky.

With that said, since we broke even (or came out ahead) by switching 1sts, that means we got a starting LB and starting CB for a 4th. That's pretty good value.

YOu had me until...DION JORDAN

Well Tannenbaum could have been like the previous 12 GMs and passed on Tunsil as well so.....

The fair way to have assessed that trade at the time is that it was a toss of the dice. To be honest, the dice are still tumbling. But because Tunsil fell to us we functionally lost nothing in the first round. Blind luck, but that still counts. I agree with your second post that the value moves on defense look really good early. And if we hit on Howard and Tunsil alone, the 2016 draft was a success.
