Shoot, I wrote a long message and lost my post. In short, I went through Pioli's picks and other bad decisions (hiring Todd Haley and trading a high pick for Matt Cassell). Pioli's record was undistinguished and certainly not someone to bring in for a regime change. Pioli was GM in KC from 2009-2012. In those 4 drafts, he bombed in 2009. He made a massive reach for Tyson Jackson. In 2011 he reached for Jonathan Baldwin but did draft Justin Houston. Other than Houston, he really screwed up that draft.
In 2010, he did have a good draft, getting Eric Berry, Dexter McCluster, Jon Asamoah (and even Tony Moeki who was promising until injuries led to his seeking exile in Buffalo). In 2012, he got Dontari Poe and Donald Stephenson.
An interesting point here is that the year BEFORE Pioli got there, in 2008, the Chiefs drafted well with Glenn Dorsey, Branden Albert, Brandon Flowers, Jamaal Charles, Brandon Carr, and Barry Richardson. Derrick Johnson was drafted in '05, Tamba Hali in '06, and Dwayne Bowe in '07. So, two observations. The Chiefs have done a nice job bringing in blue chip players. Before Pioli ever got there, the Chiefs had D Johnson, Hali, Bowe, Albert, Flowers, and Charles. Then Pioli added Houston, McCluster, Berry, Asamoah, Poe, and Stephenson. Net result: the Chiefs have collected a really nice group of draftees. Even though Pioli bombed on way too many picks, it shows that if you get some elite players (not middling like Miami does) that's far more important than having a roster full of average players drafted across the board. This is where Miami bombs. Not enough high caliber picks made.
