First Interview for GM Friday

I think the team player thing is suggesting the fins want some power sharing amongst the executives. Not one person in charge of everything. I like that approach FWIW

Jason La Canfora opines that Ross might want Gamble as an attempt to get Harbaugh (Harbaugh is currently embroiled in an ugly power struggle with Baalke in SF).

Take that for what it's worth. I think it's more likely that Harbaugh spoke highly of Gamble when Ross was courting him for the job, and the name stuck in Steve's mind, but something to consider.

Interesting, I dunno how true it is, but I do know that SanFran said if Harbaugh wanted to leave for the USC or Texas jobs they wouldn't block him

Nothing La Confora reports is based on facts. He passes off his opinions as fact and he's an idiot. Even if La Confora's suggestion of motive was remotely possible anyone with eyes would see that Harbaugh wants to stay in California...He coached the University of San Diego, Stanford and now he's with the 49ers. He's more likely to join the Chargers than the Dolphins.

Maybe they'll get the Rooney Rule candidate out of the way first. I swear, if I was black, I would take offense to that rule.

Abramson believes Omar Khan, Tom Gamble, and Scott Pioli are the favorites

Only name I don't like on that list is Pioli. Gamble is the best fit IMO. Khan is meh....he's been in Pittsburgh for over a decade and Pitt hasn't really drafted very well the last 5 or 6 years which has led to this 8-8 season they just had.

The more I think about it Highsmith is perfect. A great talent evaluator, born and raised in Miami, ties to the Packers organization, and a tough SOB who was once a heavyweight boxer. I wouldn't be suprised if he gets heavy consideration.

though in fairness to Pitt, they tend to let guys develop at a slower pace. See Keenan Lewis last year.. or the fact that Jason Worlids and Cam Heyward played damn well down the stretch.

I don't want Khan, he's a cap guy, not a player evaluation guy. I don't want ANYTHING to do with Parcells' son-in-law.

for the record, Khan started as a scout right out of college for the Saints and though he's been a cap guy for Pittsburgh he is heavily involved in scouting

Art Rooney II won't say if Dolphins have asked permission to contact Omar Khan about GM vacancy. #steelers

I just heard on the NFL Network that Gaine was the leading candidate to replace Ireland. They had Bill Polian speaking about Gaine....of note......

* Very well respected around the NFL
* Good judge of talent
* Lots of experience as an Executive and as a Player (he mentioned he played in the NFL for a short time?)

Polian seemed very high on him

I don't think they will hire Gaine, but I wouldn't be upset. FWIW, Joe Rose, who absolutely ripped Ireland up and down the board, likes him a lot.

I would prefer to see someone brought in from outside, though.

Most seem to think Gaine will not be the GM, but will get more responsibilities. He's the one credited for discovering Cam Wake before anybody else.
