Sorry, sloppy technique guys who can't run block or even down field block and have poor work ethic and no power can be had in round 3. This pick is on par with picks like Phillip Merling and Jason Allen. Sure, they had the measureables, they just were not good picks.
DIGITAL: I am one of those folks who didnt like where he was picked. i like the player, but, he could have been taken lower. thats all been hashed. the draft heads on nfl network and espn had him as a big time riser because he had great pre draft workouts and improved every year he played. that means he can be coached and learns quick and our o-line coach should be able to fix the SMALL hitches in his game.
i saw ONE write up in a mag [nfl draft] that were somewhat close to your criticism, but not as harsh. that mag, after going through it was one of those who's reports were done maybe even before the combine. they were not up to par on MANY players in that mag. so........., i give you below what LINDY'S has to say about him. PLEASE read.
WITH A SCHOOL RECORD OF 49 CONSECUTIVE STARTS FOR THE VOLS, james is more fundamentally sound than talented jr left tackle antonio richardson and offers a similar package of size and athleticism. with strong pre draft workouts, it wouldnt be surprising to see james rise from a 3rd or 4th round level to to second or even FIRST ROUND consideration due to experience and continued improvement.
STRENGTHS: alert and comfortable at right tackle. recognizes stunts and line games. surprising initial quickness, lateral agility and flexibility for his monstrous frame.
POWERFUL and COMPETITIVE with grit to KNOCK DEFENDERS OFF THE BALL AND CONTINUE DOWN FIELD. plays to DOMINATE one on one battles letting his hands do the work with good body control.
CAN SLIDE to protect the edge against the variety of speed rushers he faced in the SEC.
TECHNICALLY SOUND, MAINTAINS POSITION TO MIRROR. surprisingly light feet, natural power and quickness off the ball. can also play guard.
WEAKNESSES: Because of his massive frame, pad level is a constant battle. drops his head when run blocking and is a target for swim moves. gets over his feet when on the run "brushing" opponents to maintain course down field.
GRADE: 7.1
not quite your assessment DIGITAL, as you can see. and "SLOPPY TECHNIC" is no where implied. actually, just the opposite!! big men always have a problem with pad level but the kid is coachable and our line coach WILL improve that. just not a glaring weakness. and the other two, all VERY fixable. but as with most o-line scout reports, some of the players weaknesses are contrary to what they said about the players strengths. and a 7.1 grade is damn good.
dont like the fact they didnt trade down, but, as some have mentioned, if he is a 10 year starter on the line, all is forgiven [like pouncy]. and the thing i REALLY LIKE? its the fact RT is his natural position and he has been playing it most of his football life. i hate it when we draft guys and try to work them in at other spots they havnt played. PHILBIN said that james pass blocking was stellar with exellent feet and super strong anchor. plus he is durable which is a plus because we have been plagued with injuries to the 0-line for a few years now. his run blocking is well above average and will get better with nfl tutoring. LOOK AT the top 5 or so linemen in this draft. ALL of them had knocks on their game and a few like mathews and lewan need serious work with their feet. when you compare weaknesses between james and the top 4 ot's, james fairs out better than them in a few areas namely footwork, lateral slide and mirroring and big initial punch which is important in pass blocking to knock the defender off his path.
in closing, james is a great RT choice. we could have gotten him a couple pics later, but, they had him as their guy and felt he had the most ready pass blocking skills of the ot's. they are obviously bent on fixing this o-line first as we need it and they need to take that issue off the board so they can properly evaluate tanny in the last year of his contract. hickey inherited him and has no ties. if tanny still wiffs on his down field, big plays and continues to hold the ball to long and not progress with throwing in anticipation, they WILL NOT pay him the big money.
now all they have to do is come up with a way to grab XFS and this line has the ability to be one of the best in the nfl.
