The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel now confirms that free agent Matt Flynn receiving the Packers' franchise tag is "not going to happen."

Beat writer Tom Silverstein calculated the club's cap commitments, and they only have $7 million to work with toward re-signing Jermichael Finley and Scott Wells, among others. Tagging Flynn would cost $14 million, fully guaranteed. The franchise tag for tight ends is dropping from $7.3 million to $5.5 million under the new CBA, so Finley is almost certain to be tagged. Flynn will hit the open market, and the Dolphins are the favorites to sign him

I think its a no brainer that Flynn lands here. Does anyone really doubt that is going to happen?

I really do think that Flynn is the guy we are going to get. We can speculate and dream for Peyton Manning but Flynn seems to be the most realistic fit.

The press is sure eating it up. But we haven't heard any peeps from our new staff as to their interest in Flynn specifically. That's either a very good sign (keeping it hush hush) or very bad sign (not interested in him as our QB).

Between Philbin and Sherman, I'd guestimate the odds that either Flynn and/or Tannehill end up on the roster in the next 3mos are at least as high as Rex Ryan again making an *** out of himself during that timespan.

Most fans want Manning but Philbin has to go with the QB he is comfortable with and wants to start his HC career with.

That may be because that would be tampering

It would be a nightmare to me if the fins sign Manning not a dream.

I would NOT be surprised to see both. Why? flynn is unproven and tannehill is insurance. we get flynn and he works out, tannehill becomes tradebait a couple seasons down the road. Flynn doesn't work out we trade him for peanuts and tannehill gets a shot. Its the most intelligent thing to do. Now watch us **** it up.

Well, of course they weren't gonna tag him.

How much $$$ did anyone think they were going to tie up at QB?

Seems like the logical move. Flynn knows the WCO that Joe Philbin and Mike Sherman wants to run. He can come in from Day 1, and can help get the rest of the offense quickly acclimated to the WCO.

I keep reading this same story and still struggle with the Packers giving Flynn away on a silver platter.

Could they not restructure a few contracts, sign Finley long term with a back ended contract and tag Flynn just to secure the 2nd round pick they most likely will get by eventually trading him?
