From a galaxy far far away....
Got a small rant...
I get a bit peeved when a large % of the fanbase continually bag the FO for the decisions they do or do not make in relation to coaching, players, drafts etc.
Last year, most of the fanbase were ticked off at the poor job the Henning did. And rightly so. He basically handcuffed our qb for most of the year, and almost ever game, whenever henne got on a bit of a roll, pulled him from the game or called a stupid play.
So, what does the FO do? Well, Henning retires...or was asked to retire, and they bring in an OC from Cleveland. We have a OC that is 35 years younger, more than likely a lot more aggressive & has a better grasp on current day football. And still a lot of the fanbase are not happy. It would be nice too see Daboll actually get a fair crack at this position before he gets thrown under a bus. But our fanbase wont allow that. He sucks already because he was..(a) From Cleveland. (b) Not a big name co-ordinator. (c) Co-Ordinated an offence that was slightly worse than ours.
We then get rid of David Lee. That made me happy. He did nothing with the qb's that he had apart from Pennington, ad Chad P knew football. But he didnt make a lot of progress in the development of our QB's. Henne struggles, 90% of the fanbase blame him, but really, a crap OC, porous OLine, terrible position coaching and game day decisions all contributed to hennes below average season. But the fanbase blame Henne. Pat White was a terrible pick, and did nothing to help the team. Perhaps the QB coaching was more to blame than White. Perhaps. Same can be said for Beck, and any other QB that has come through this team in the past few year.
Next. Parcells heads off. Some say great, probably most of the fanbase. Personally, I thought he was a great asset to the team as he turned over a crap roster into one of the youngest and one that has a hell of a lot of potential. So Ireland takes over, and as he has dallas cowboy heritage, he is hated already. His draft (with Parcells) last year picked up a few starters, and a few backups. injuries played there part with Odrick, Edds etc, but overall it wasnt a bad draft. This years draft on paper filled a few issues that we had last year - C & RB, and we all know that we cant cure a teams issues with one or two drafts. Well, level headed fans know this, but most here blew up deluxe when Mallett was passed over. Mallett IMO will not a be a starting QB in this league whilst Brady still has two good knees. If he was so good, he would have gone in the 2nd round at the latest. So, give Ireland a chance at his 1st draft as the GM.
So then, onto the players. Henne is on the hot seat no doubt. The FO doesnt draft a qb, doesnt trade for one (yet) so they must have some line of thought that Henne should be given a decent shot with new position coaching & OC. I admit that I wouldnt mind having Orton here, but not to give up what Denver wanted originally.
Then the FO doesnt look at Braylon Edwards. And the fanbase go ballistic. The best FA WR available the fanbase scream. The same fanbase that ripped him for dropping passes as a Jet, as a Brown. But now all is forgiven. Because he is a FA. No thanks.
Then the team starts bringing in players to compete. Again the fanbase start thinking OMG, he surely that player cant be our starter. The end of the world is here. We bring in Colombo. We bring in Matt Moore. Brent Brackett. Micah Kia. Mark Restelli. Jason Trusnik. sure there not world beaters or all pro, but they are bought in to be backups, special teams and maybe start if absolutely necessary. But the fanbase want big name players. We sign Reggie Bush. Big name player who although wont be an every down back, bring speed to a position that hasnt had speed since...god knows when. Speed is something that cannot be coached, and he will bring more to the team than most think.
We sign Burnett to take over from Crowder. Crowder was not a game changing player. Was not instinctive. Was slow. Did not get to the QB. Burnett does all that and a bit more. We also sign a couple of UDFA in Devlin & Grigsby who were a couple of the better UDFA's available. Wether or not they get any playing time only time will tell.
So. Where are we.
We are 1 week into a training camp, still 5 or so weeks from the 1st game, and at this stage, no one really knows who will be the starter at any of the O line positions. There are still plenty of players that will be bought in to TC, plenty more suggestions, rumours, media hype etc. It could be any one of 3 or 4 players, and possibly someone who isnt even on the team.
The same for the WR positions. Speed is something we now have. Hopefully we can use it.
In the end, the front office appears to be looking at a lot of players, and thats great, but the fan base - and plenty here, are not happy with some of the players that they are looking at. Well, guess what fans, your job is safe. The coaching staff are the ones that are looking to bolster the playing talent, and in turn, probably save there *** for a few more seasons.
Regardless of wether or not the players they look at are ex cowboys, ex lions, ex who ever, if the FO believe that they can still contribute in this league, then they will bring them in. The season is not won in August, and many teams are in the same position as us.
But are those fans as negative as Miami's fans?
Give this team, which is a fair bit different from last years team, a chance.
Not too much to ask is it.
