Football -vs- Soccer discussion

well, americans have plenty of other large sports to split a difference. i have nothing against soccer. its a fine sport. i see no reason for you to knock baseball. its obvious that people have different tastes

I feel ya man, my whole beef for knocking baseball is like I said, its not based on even ground (lack of salary cap), they play way too many games, too many games with a 200 million dollar club facing a 15 million dollar club, I mean it just seems pointless to me. Who on earth could get excited about 162 games a year. Not me. I mean then some games when u have a pitching duel, u have guys who don't do anything all game, and the game seems real slow. I mean I went to game 7 back in 97 and it was thrilling, but for the most part, the game is boring, especially during the season. Football is one game a week, and thats much better, something to look forward to.

Other than the number of games, the imbalance in the strength of teams for all the top soccer leagues is at least that of baseball

Anyway, I like both, though football gets the nod for me if I have to choose. Oh, and let me tell you the reason why (this reason, none of you will be able to argue against :D )

I like dolphins (the animals) and you name ANY team the dolphins (assuming they are in a top league) I'll root for them (which is why I'm a fin fan). Now, as far as I know, only 1 pro sports team is named "dolphins", so I have grown to love football (only if the fins play, or if a game is relevant to the fins).

:D

Football > Soccer. People outside the US don't have the access that us American's do to the games. It's a National sport. With more game being played outside the US in the future, excpect football to get recognition world wide with even more fans. Maybe not as big as soccer, but it will be substantial. Soccer is world wide, thus it's televised and broadcasted world wide. I could be wrong, but that's what I think.

You think so . . wow I mean I really get nervous seeing a team whose payroll is 4 times the size of the team that they are playing go at it, when I can see 2 teams who is put on the field based on their heritage and give their best effort as a team and a country. Did u know in some of these African countries that are in the tournament that they are in civil war right now, and they have put that on hold until the soccer team finishes there world cup run. You know the Ivory Coast Federation promises every player there own hacienda (villa) for competing at this stage, and the players tell them they can keep it and that they just want peace in their home country. Do u know last WC when Argentina did not qualify the amount of political corruption and riots were going on in that country. Its more than a sport man, its more than a team, its a country/ a religion/ a lifestyle in many countries around the world. Americans can't see this tho, they only see what the media presents. Soccer is the ultimate team sport, and when put in difficult situations, like a man down, players must worker harder as a team to be successful.

I know some people have it set in stone that soccer is boring and american sports triumph it . . I'm sorry the World cup can't change that mind set.

So people watch the World Cup, but do Americans care about the other soccer that is played? It seems that you're discussing the culture around soccer not the actual games that are played. In terms of team sport, wouldn't hockey be more of a team sport? Everybody who dresses plays except the goalie, and when teams are short-handed I believe it is much more difficult because their are only 4 guys on the ice including the goalie. Also Americans are drawn to great individual performers. I don't think people wanted to see the Detroit Pistons in the NBA finals because they have some real good players but no great players. What is an American sport? Football? Basketball is played worldwide, baseball is played worldwide, hockey is dead in the USA. Americans don't like soccer but who cares? Is soccer hurting because we would rather watch football rather than futbol?

It is tough to get excited for all 162 games a year but the baseball schedule gives fans a fair indicator of the elite teams in the league. I really don't care about the differences in payroll the A's and Twins have shown the past few years that teams can compete with lower payrolls. Football teams are on even grounds so their is alot of parity with teams going from bad to good quickly. For fans the easy thing to do with baseball is to criticize the Yankees or the big market teams and disregard that the ownership of some of the low market teams who refuse to spend money.

To many games in baseball most fans dont even remember half of them and who scored in them. Also you hardly see a stadium sell out every game, it just to much. If I go to 10% Baseball games a year i've gone to too many.

you think baseball is boring becuse you dont understand it

What's there not to understand? it's a simple concept. Hit,run, pitch, defend, wait around for 10 minutes between each batter. Sounds boring to me. Atleast to me, i like sports that you need skill to play, baseball is more luck then skill.

Not if you use Steriods or HDH. Sad fact that they have to use that to make it interesting. There so much cheating in baseball that pretty soon there will be clones at bat or pitching.

Exactly and i still find it boring with the roids. The atmosphere alone of a soccer game makes soccer better without even watching it.

So do I. I only watch games that are close and in the 8th inning. It will still take 1hr to finish. Last night the dodgers vs. A's went 17inning and the winning run scored on a walk. The freaking pitcher threw I think 16 straight balls to 3 players. It was stupid and only saw parts of it because I was ordering drinks at the casino last night and it was on the TV. I rather have watch 3 1-1 tie games in soccer at least you'll get more action then seeing a human experiment swing a wood bat every 5 mins.

Why does baseball get the total blame? I would put money on more football players taking HGH and steroids than baseball but nobody ever criticizes it.

So a guy who throws a 95 mph fastball consistently gets lucky every pitch? Soccer is great worldwide but it is about as popular as the pro bowlers association in the USA.

That why the US match has the highest rating on ESPN this year.

I'm talking more like MLS not the World Cup. Every four years American fans will watch some World Cupt but you're telling me that people care if the New York Red Bulls or whatever they're called lose to some other MLS team?
