For the LOVE of the GAME! Who would play.....for $35K

Would an actor act? Would a rock star rock? It's called supply and demand. The revenue generated has to go some where.

Exactly. Sadly, for me anyway, I realize I could never play in the NFL. However I know there are definetly guys who play in the NFL that could do my job (SW Eng). In fact I'm sure a guy like Ryan Fitzpatrick and his Harvard education could be doing just about anything he wants. It's supply and demand.

Theres love for the game and theres a need to survive. With 35k you will live under a bridge and barely have enough to have 2 good meals a day. Im not even talking about living in a mansion and driving exp cars with a bunch of jewlery rich, but for someone whos doign this kind of job needs good financial security becuase theyre careers are on average 3 years. Obviously theres players who play wayyy longer but the avg nfl career is 3 years. so yeah they need theyre money to live n have a decent life after football.

There are a lot of NFL fans out there that believe that with the money the players are making today, that most don't really care if they win a Super Bowl Ring or not - Truth be told.
Yeah, it would be NICE to win a SB ring; but at the end of the day it's all about the $$$.

Certainly there's all the talk about winning being the most important thing to the players; trophies & rings & team; but how many actually believe it's true?

Who do you believe in TODAY's NFL would sign up for a 12 year career if they could only make $35K per year as an NFL player - nothing else (Endorsements, etc.)?

That is, what modern/current players do you believe love NFL football SO MUCH they would still play if only paid $35K?

For me, Ray Lewis comes to mind.

35k is around the median income in the US. MOST Americans live off of that income. Of course, many have 2 income households so it comes out to more like 70k per household.

Everyone. Player's played for that & less for 70 years.

Joe Namath went to the AFC because the NFL (St. Louis Cardinals) wouldn't buy him a T-Bird as a bonus in addition to his ave. salary they agreed on. Jets bought him the car & paid him more.

Sounds funny today. Players used to all have jobs ... like selling of cars & insurance to cash in on people knowing them & getting the opportunity to chat them up.

Most athletes pay their own money just to play sports ... like all the jocks on the Forum.

Namath was drafted when? 1966? 1967? or some time in that range. Cost of living was a lot less back then $35K back then would be equivalent to $80K-$85K now. I'd play for that but not $35K. $80K is what practice squad guys make.

How many of today's players would STILL want to be NFL players if they were NOT paid Millions of dollars? That is, which NFL players SO LOVE the GAME that they would play no matter how much they were paid.

I don't believe that most NFL players pursue a career in the NFL because they love the game. I'm not suggesting that they don't love football but it's the benefits that come with being a professional athlete that draws most of them, not their love of the game.

The only guys who'd be playing football are the guys who don't have a lot of options. Smart guys would play in college and then move on to real jobs.

I never said Joe Namath received $35k. Not sure, but recall NFL offered $15k or so ... and Jets paid $20k or so ... & gave him a T-Bird which was probably $3k or so.

I do remember (grew up in St. Louis) Namath was picked 6th by the Cards ... would have gone higher, but he flat out stated he wanted the T-Bird with his salary ... so the old schoo ownersl blew him off in the top picks.

Namath got rich from endorsements ... not football. He did all kinds of "cool for the day" publicity stunts ... he even did a Hanes panty-hose commercial showing off his legs .... something like "If we can make his legs look this good, imagine what we could do for yours!!"

you know they get taxed almost half their pay right? So...... If you play for 35k, your looking at a little over 17K!

Plus all the off season work you gotta put into and the injuries... $ 500,000 at least!

dude, if you make 35k, the tax range is more like 20%, not 50..lol

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Nooooooooooooooooo!! One hit form Ray Lewis and I'm probably dead. Not woth 35K! lol

Screw that, I wouldn't do many jobs for $35K. LOL

But seriously, these guys risk their LIVES to play this game. Forget about now, if anyone knows anything about traumatic brain injury... These guys are in trouble down the road.

Id play so I can teach some of these guys how to wrap up...I'm tired of seeing the crappy "shoulder bump" that all the running backs are either running straight through or tripping up on for an extra 5-6 yards....damn football players forgot what they learned in POPwarner..
