For Those Bashing Philbin For Calling Those Defensive Timeouts...

We lost the game because we let them score a TD instead of keeping them from crossing mid field....hindsight is 20/20 if he knew they would score a TD he wouldn't have used them...I don't fault him for this, I fault or run Defense

Saying this after a mistake is complete and total bullcrap. When you do something that stands out as obvious to anyone who has watched football that it is not the norm,it doesn't take hindsight to tell you that it's a bad idea. I knew at the time that it was an incredibly stupid thing to do, and I could tell what was going to happen before it did. That's not hindsight. Besides, it's about time we have some coaches with foresight.

You can use the hindsight card when things don't play out how most of the information available predicted it would. If you draft a community hero and standup guy, and he turns out to be a murderer (not comparing to real life examples), you can play the hindsight card. Not when things play out exactly as could have been predicted.

The biggest problem with the timeouts were they were both delayed and let time tick off the clock. The second time out I feel like 8 seconds went off the clock before a TO was called.

It's like he didn't even know if he wanted to call one or not...

Please go watch the end of the Cowboys-Giants game. Tom Coughlin managed his timeouts in the same manner in nearly the same situation with exactly the same time remaining in the game. He needed to preserve time because the Cowboys were in field goal range. .

Sorry, but it was not the same situation. The Giants-Cowboys game was TIED at 21. The Phins were up 16-13. If we play things differently, and don't call time outs, it forces them to use time outs, or possibly play to kick a field goal to tie it up. The bottom line is our defense needed to make a stop and didn't, and Philbin's time outs didn't help the situation.

Just checked the game log. Panthers had a 1st and 10 from the Dolphins 29 with 1:45 remaining. That is when Philbin used his 1st timeout. Are people honestly arguing that with 1:45 remaining and 1 timeout that the Panthers did not have enough time to go for a winning touchdown if Philbin had not called timeout???

1:45 is an eternity because an offense has time to spike the ball, to line up in the hurry up, and to run plays to the sideline, etc. This still limits what they can do from a play-calling standpoint and limits the number of usable downs they have. If you find a way to force them to burn their timeout, then they can only run certain plays with a low risk due to having get the FG at a minimum. By taking all of your timeouts, you open up the opponents full playbook, which is even more ridiculous when you consider that the their best weapon is a QB's ability to run and a stable of running backs.
