My day as Dolphin Broadcaster! That's a great story!
Hank could be difficult, but he was a straight shooter.
In 1993 my parents bid on a chance to co-host Hank's show on 560 WQAM for charity (Big Brothers/Big Sisters I think), and won.
I had no idea, they surprised me with it.
I think it was during training camp. Drove down to Shula's in Miami Lakes.
I had never broadcast on radio before.
I met the Hammer for the first time. He briefed me on how to do this and that (and probably thought I was going to generally keep my mouth shut. LOL.).
We go on air, he does a little spiel, then he introduces me as his co-host. He and I talk some Dolphins football, we take some calls. I dominate the discussion. Hank was like "WTF?" I remember launching into a diatribe that everyone was sleeping on Craig Veasey. LMAO.
It was a great experience and a great time. After the segment Hank said, "you really know your Fins."
YOU ARE CORRECT, SIR!
After that I would run into him many times over the years. At The Forge (he loved The Forge), and generally around town.
He'd always say hi and we'd catch up for a few minutes.
He was my second favorite Dolphins radio personality of all time behind only the Mad Dog.
Rest in peace, Hammer.
don't know what Shareef was thinking. that place had been a goldmine. i read that it's coming back in the not-too-distant-future.Shame what they did to the Forge before it finally died. Changed the menu, tried to turn it into a hipster spot, with gimmicks like automated wine stations for people to hook up their iPods or smartphones.
Always incredible to me what dumb people will do in the quest for more money. Versailles might suck now, but at least they didn't do that.
WIOD?RIP Hammer, i'll always remember listening to his late afternoon show on QAM during the summer 20 years ago.
The glory days of WIOD-- long, long gone.Loved Hank. Loved Uncle Neil. Loved Phil Hendrie.
At 12 I used to crank call Hank all the time. The best one was when we spoke for a couple minutes before I asked him who he had in the amateur ladies softball tournament.
"I've got you down"Phil Hendrie is legitimately insane, but also probably the funniest man alive. WIOD decided they'd rather pay Neil Rogers, though.![]()
